Serious question;

What is your rank?

I've heard that it takes approximately 20 years to make it to Captain, and another 20 years to make it to General.

How old are you? Have you been promoted? Realistically if you stick around for another 9 years what do you think your rank will be?

Lol naw 5-7 years to get CPT, enlisted and commissioned are different. Based on the fact he even made this thread means he's enlisted.

You've done 11. Ride it out to 20. You won't regret it. I just finished my 20 and I'm good now.

You get some kinda benefits at 20 you don't get at 11? Another 9 years is a looooong time if his heart ain't fully into it

Retirement pay and benefits (lifetime health insurance, etc) at 20. Even if I get out now I still get benefits from the VA and my GI Bill for school among other things. Obviously doing 20 gets you the most.

9 years does feel like a long time but it’s never been about that. I could do the 9 years no problem, but this honestly just feels like I’m at a turning point in my life. Where I don’t think the military is something I want to continue to have overtake my life anymore.

Yeah that was the other thing I had in mind. Haven't been in the military personally, but obviously it's much more "life consuming" than any other job. Other jobs you don't have worry about once you're clocked out, military you're basically surrounded by it damn near 24/7/365

I will say this. 20 years and you get free health for you and your fam for life.

Then you get a retirement check at 20.

So let say you get $2,250 a month for retirement.

Health insurance is damn near $600 a month.

We up to $2,850. Then you go to the VA and get 30%. Not sure what that is but lets say $500.

Now you are getting over $3,000 in money and benefits for the rest of your life.

If you can get that outside the military and more then you are making the right decision.

I have a friend in Bama clocking about $4,000 a month and has a state job making $30 an hour. His VA claim is going through for bad knees, back and sleeping disorder. He will drop the ED if he needs it.

Oh and fuck that reserve shit. Just do the VA because the reserves you have to wait till age 60.

All of this. That Healthcare and Dental is the key for me. I was at the VA last week and the Dr. was telling me that Tricare is such a bargain and won't change but that private Healthcare/insurance is about to get out of hand. My kids have been to the dental and Dr quite a few times this year and I gave barely paid anything. Nice retirement check covers my mortgage and more. Oh and I used my VA loan to get a house built. Nice disability check from the VA every month. I have a nice job and also get $1500 for OJT from the VA. I don't really have to work but I can't sit at home all day. And I'm about to get this Dodge Challenger Scat Pack cause I'm about to go through a midlife crisis. And I'm not even 40 yet. Doing those 20 was the best decision I ever made. Just some thoughts man.

I was at 10yrs 6mos when I decided to give it up

because of my last deployment I was stop-lossed for 18months

the stop-loss shit was revealing cuz I had two other mofos in my same unit who were stop-lossed and they died while we were on deployment

I would tell anybody at the midpoint who is thinking about getting out (especially if u are enlisted and don't have ur degree) to consider the following:

VA compensation benefits can be equivalent or even more than full retirement benefits

full retirement pay gets taxed, while VA payments do not

if u do the full 20 u and ur fam will NOT get free healthcare, u will have to pay for Tricare

and Tricare can either be good or bad.....depends on if u cool with using military doctors who sometimes practice on u.............also access is a big benefit or disadvantage to using Tricare

if u want to work for the govt/military and receive the same stability, then civil service provides a lot of the same benefits

if I had to do it again, I def would've taken the same path and got out even tho I did enjoy my time in the Army

if u have health issues - get out

if u aren't getting promoted fast enough - get out (and maybe get ur degree and consider going back in)

if u have a nest egg to carry u for at least a year - get out

if ur kids are young enough to appreciate u coming home everyday - get out

if mentally u can't stand working for people locked into groupthink - get out

otherwise if none of those situations apply, and u and the fam are happy............then another 10yrs ain't shit

u should be deep enough in the game to where u can navigate easily and knock out the last yrs until retirement

Enlisted are privates, specialist, corporal, sergeants & Sergeant major.

Commissioned are lieutenants, captains, majors & generals and shit.

Commissioned calls the plays. Enlisted carries them out.

Alright, so after about 11 years being in and with 7 months left in my contract.. I’m actually thinking if this is the time to go. Wifey kinda pushing for me to get out. A lot because of how things have gone and the threat of a war. Normally I’d go all in with the “it’ll be ok” response but these days I don’t blame her. Along with the fact that I’m kinda at a place where I want something new.

The security of being in the military is what’s the major thing. The insurance, overall benefits kinda spoil you. Especially when you got a family. I got a couple of things in mind. Taking classes to become an insurance agent. Maybe get her uncle to help me out in becoming a cop in Fredricksberg, VA (not something I wanna do forever) while I go to school. It’s just a big ass step.

Anyone been in this situation?

BRUH... NEXT JULY, I HIT 20 YEARS AND ILL BE DONE...

I SHARE THE SAME FEELINGS AS YOU ABOUT THE MILITARY.. SHYT IS GETTING WORST, ALL THESE WARS, THE CHANGES, JUST ALL THIS NONSENSE AINT COOL... ILL BE DONE WITH MY MASTERS IN NOVEMBER, BUT I HAVE NO IDEA ON WHAT I WANNA DO WHEN I GET OUT...

THE MEDICAL, DENTAL, 1ST AND 15TH CHECKS SPOIL YOU.. BUT IM READY FOR A "REGULAR" LIFE... I JOINED ONE MONTH AFTER HIGH SCHOOL, SO ILL STILL BE IN MY 30'S WHEN IM DONE...

T/S still didn't tell us his rank.

That makes all the difference. If you're still a private get out. But if you're a sergeant you could stay for another 10 years and maybe get promoted to Captain.

Captain looks really good on your resume.

The Navy has O-6 captains. A O-3 is LT and that take about 4-6 years. In the Navy if you make LCDR by 8 years or three tries. You are out.

I have Reserve tricare and I dont use military doctors. Hell I cant! I have to go out in the economy. I regret getting caught up in high year tenure but in the end I cant do shit now but keep hustling this reserve check.

Like I said man. I know mfers that make 6 figures regret not doing 20 years. I also know cats that make 20 dollars a hour that never look back. It is all about you and your situation.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With that being said Fuck that Army shit. I have been trying to go officer for damn near 3 years. I could have went officer in the army yesterday. But I never looked at that the Army thinking ......................Yeah I might give that a try.

Nah fuck that.

That's that BS! I go on missions with Army cats and they hit me with shit and I cant.

Went to Korea and they wanted us to sleep outside on camping shit.

Nah player!
