Common has such an odd Discography. You can get 3 straight albums of great damn near classic hip hop, then one album of "What in the entire fuck?" then 2 more great albums, a album where hes trying to sound like the young rappers of today, then he'll continue doing the good ol Common type albums.

I think if you look how and why EC was created you might appreciate it more. It was structure with every 3 songs had the same theme and product from a certain type of genre, then it would switch. He was still spitting. His production styles was now being used by half the industry thanks to the Blueprint. So he switch it up. If you look at Common 3rd album "One day it'll all make sense " and 4th "Water for Chocolate " which predates the Blueprint, they all have a mix of really souls sample beats mix with hard beats. After Jay-Z did it, then Scarface did it aswell as Az and others. I think Common was trying do something new because everyone was doing what he already had done better.

I don't care for UMC but I love Electric Circus. Never understood the hate for it. Beautiful production from J-Dilla, The Neptunes, features from Mary J, Bilal, Jill Scott. To me, this was the sound of 'The Love Below' before 'The Love Below' existed. Experimentation with different genres of Black music and expression. He sings for the first time in his career on this record too, on a song dedicated to Jimi Hendrix lmao! I appreciate the risk he took with this, and if his former three albums weren't so hot, this album would be rated high.

Exactly!! Well said.

Lol ive heard Electric Circus maybe once in my life and it was back in highschool. Might try giving it an honest listen someday soon. I know i hate UMC though.

I don't really fuck with Electric Circus, i think he bit off more than he can chew with that album, but i admire what he was trying to do. Universal Mind Control is a piece of shit that for my money is the worst album any great rapper has ever made He basically purposefully made a terrible album because he wanted to be played in the club. He should be glad he isn't more popular or that album would have ruined his career.

But with that aside thank you for opening the Pandora's Box that reminded me of this track from around UMC.
