Right and police don't always tell what they know(for good reason, sometimes you get a loony who says he did something he didn't do), maybe they ARE piecing something together(not implying they probably are, but they could be, it's a possibility) and trying not to spook the "suspect"(not saying there is one, but there could be, it is possible).

I don't think there was a plot to murder her, but some sick fuck COULD have just wanted to watch someone slowly freeze to death. Sicker shit has happened. So to think it's out of the ordinary, no it isn't, sick shit happens all the time.
