Never heard of her and I was never taught about her school. It's good to see a black person getting this type of recognition from the country.

It's good for the black youth in this country. Hopefully it gets some of them to go and learn about black history in this country.

Smh @ still having to look at that hag on the $20 bill.

Idk why they puttin her on the 10 . Put her on 20 or 50

But i never heard of her or been taught bout her . But like homie said itsa good ting for black kids down here . Some are losing their way

Good deal. From what I've heard, Black Nova Scotians have a very interesting history especially if juxtaposed with the experiences of Blacks here in Amerikkka..

Idk why but I always thought the first nonwhite person they put on our money was going to be Asian.

Glad I didn't bet on that

Viola Irene Desmond (July 6, 1914 – February 7, 1965) was a Black Nova Scotian businesswoman who challenged racial segregation at a film theatre in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, in 1946. She refused to leave a whites-only area of the Roseland Theatre and was unjustly convicted of a minor tax violation used to enforce segregation. Desmond's case is one of the most publicized incidents of racial discrimination in Canadian history and helped start the modern civil rights movement in Canada. Desmond acted nine years before the famed incident by civil-rights activist Rosa Parks, with whom Desmond is often compared. Desmond was granted a posthumous pardon, the first to be granted in Canada. The government of Nova Scotia also apologized for prosecuting her for tax evasion and acknowledged she was rightfully resisting racial discrimination. She will also be the first Canadian woman to be featured on a Canadian banknote, the $10 bill.

Well damn... apparently we bit the whole Civil Rights Movement from Canada.

That's what D from Battlestar Galactica has been reduced to? Friggin Canadian online PSA's?

Despicable.

It's not an online PSA, it's televised and sponsored by the government. Heritage moments were pretty ubiquitous on television when I was growing up. They seem to be an effort to bring Canadians in diverse geographies closer together in our multicultural society.

Here's one on the inventor of basketball:

There's one on Terry Fox:

Another on the underground railroad

Inuit Art

Building of railroads by Chinese Canadians

Some of these are pretty offensive by today's standards. I guess they fulfilled their purpose of trying to carve out a Canadian identity for us, though.

Always remembered they showed these on TV. Still do if you catch them at the right time. The basketball one is hilarious. Dude was travelling like crazy lmao

Yeah they came on Global all the time. The good old days when I used to watch Passions and eat passion flakies.

I think the $10 is the one bill I use the least and almost never have. Would have been nice to see her on the $50.
