PR and Ski beats sound alot alike to me, if someone was to tell me PR produced Dead Presidents i would believe them.

ski i cant identify b/c he no longer uses hardware, he a software dude so the sound quality changes.

pete rock can usually be identified b/c of his drum programming and sound selection

dilla, at least the beats that were not released on major albums are definitely identifiable. his drum programing is usually not quantized and his drum sounds are usually real BIG/HEAVY drums

madlib has a similar style to dilla but i never got into him tooo much.

9th wonder tends to use the same snare over and over again, or maybe he'll layer it, but its usually there, front and center

and primo, well primo's chops, scratches and drums are so easily identifiable, and usually kinda predictable.

the rest, doom, no id & al are hard to identify, altho al has his own sound, its not consistent

Wow, this thread is a quick way to discredit yourself

WTF is a 'underground proucer' smmfh

B/c outside of 5 or 6 star producers, theres everybody else...Moreover, you named some of the most repsected, prominent producers not just recently, but EVER. SMH at that bein underground

Broaden a lil bit, dude. Khrysis, Statik Slektah, Jake One...i GUESS could b cosidered underground. Ngga said Pete Rock is a underground producer smh

But realy, there is no such thing as an underground producer. Them nggas eatin, you cant judge them like rappers. They produce shyt for popular artists that we often dont find out till years later, u know since nggas dnt buy albums and see credits no more. i.e 9th wonder prod. for Mary J, Badu, Beyonce...

I think the reason for this is because they do tend to fuck with a wider range of sounds..The Neptunes or Timbaland are easily identifiable because they stick to their lane and perfect it. But in all honesty, Preem, Dilla, Madlib, 9th, B!NK and Mr. Porter are some of the only producers I can recognise right off the rip.

Dude please, you know what the fuck i mean. They all have a underground sound (chopping up samples, soulful and minimalist beats). How the fuck am i discrediting myself, you are seriously not gonna sit here and tell me any of these dudes have a commercial sound like a Timberland. I don't give a fuck if they produce for mainstream artist, their sound is underground.

alchemist? really, alot of that nigga shit sound the same

yeah i don't really see that i can usually tell an alchemist beat but really all that shit doesn't matter as long as the beat is dope. Some of the "super producers" shit don't be hitting but since pharell made it it's dope or since kanye made it it's a masterpiece.

Uhh, quite easily if you actually LISTEN. Listen to the sound, the craft, the STYLE. Stop hearing shit and LISTEN.

None of these producers sound the same. At all. Yea they all might have 'soulful' sounding records, but they sound nothing alike. I hear beats from these producers all the time and I can easily identify who is who without looking. With your judgement you could say the same with mainstream producers.

Madlib tends to use a lot of compression in his beats, plus he uses no software its all analogue, very raw sounding. Dilla's sound is a bit cleaner and his drum programming is top notch. Ski beats now uses live instrumentation so you can hear live instruments in his music. Alchemist = grimey style. Shit I can go on and on man.

Just because YOU can't hear the difference doesn't mean they all sound alike.

And to the person that said Madlib & Dilla have similar styles, they don't. Just listen to the album they did together called JayLib. You can tell who did which beat, its completely obvious. Maybe as a producer & composer myself I just study beats & music too much, so I can't agree with you on this thread.

I can usually distinguish a dilla, preemo, no.id beat. But guys like alchemist have never really interested me or really stood out with their beats... I know niggas gonna crucify me now....

Im curious tho, what is whats the purpose of the thread?

B/c if we agree that here are 5 or 6 big name producers (Kanye, Timbo, Pharell,etc.)...wouldnt everybody else be undergorund?? So ur essentially saying 'Can u differentiate between producers who make the bulk of non-commercial music' and that just doesnt make sense as a premise for a thread

But if underground refers to the sound, than is Justice League underground? Cuz if u listen to 'The Joy' Kanye ft Jay z, prod by Pete Rock...it sounds like some shyt off Deepr Than Rap, produced by Justice League...so im just confused at ur thread.

Bullshyt.

Listen to Pete Rock 'The Joy'... i'll put my houseon it u couldnt tell me that shyt sound like, for example, It Aint Hard to Tell. And i KNOW what to listen for (snares, claps, etc.)

So when u heard Ron Browse' new shyt around 2008 u knew it was him? Jumpin Out the Window sounds like Ether?...which sounds like like Mood Muzik 2? Bullshyt. These nggas are who they are for a reason.

They have signature sounds which they bank on, yes, but they all go outside their lane and produce shyt you could NOT guess they made.

Honestly, I could just about to tell the difference from the majority of that list...especially Pete Rock, Premo, Ski, Alchemist, Hi-Tek and 9th Wonder.

NO I.D.'s sound is Kanye's blueprint. Madlib's and J.Dilla's sound are similar.

Why are you getting your panties in a bunch??????? I created the thread to ask a question of what separates these niggas sounds, because they all have the same basic foundation.

None of what you typed makes no damn fucking sense, because i consider niggas like Jelly Roll, Battlecat, Rick Rock, etc underground and clearly their sound is nothing like those guys i named. I'm specifically talking about those niggas i name! As for the Justice League, their sound clearly sounds nothing like a Ski,Premo, etc, they don't chop samples like those dudes.

You are so god damn off tangent now and throwing my thread out of the loop.

Ur mad.

But anyway, your list is what threw it off

When u start mentionin Ski, who just did 2 Currensy albums that sounded NOTHING like his Jay Z/Camp Lo days...and NO ID, who stopped makin beats like that when he was workin w/ Common...ur argument went in different directions.

Madlib=Dilla=Doom is understandable. Hi Tek = 9th Wonder= NO ID?? D.O.A. sounds like a 9th wonder track? Does that sound logical? No. A smaller sample of producers would have made more sense, but whatever. Continue.

Yes it's logical if you listen to the body of their work, i'm listening to NO ID "Black Album" right now and it sounds like some Pete Rock shit.

Thats the thing, you don't just listen to snares and claps. You also listen to how they chop samples, basslines, hi hats, and the overall mix of the sound which when added together makes it pretty damn easy. And as for Ron Brown, I never checked for him so you got me there. Ether to me wasn't a fire beat, and a lot of his stuff I don't consider fire so I never checked for his production.

So if like you said, they all go outside their lane and produce shit I could NOT have guessed, then whats the point of this thread? Didn't you just contradict yourself?
