Giancarlo confirmed this intentional ambiguity in the Q&A vids he did for Reddit, basically they just lettin the fans decide on this one

personally i think he was: 1) Tio basically called him a fag to his face in the pool flashback, 2) the way Gus flipped out when dude got popped, 3) my gaydar went haywire during those scenes where he'd invite ppl to his crib for dinner. Besides how many fag Drug Kingpins have we seen, shit makes him more unique imo. Imagine a alternate universe where Omar Little is his hitman lmao.

i guess if its just left up to the audience then it doesn't really matter at all. it won't ever be revealed. so i'm sticking with the assumption that he wasn't, simply because there is nothing to suggest that he was. his relationship w/ max was a part of the story to show that gus was also involved in a partnership, just like walt and jesse. him getting killed and seeking vengeance is how i imagine Walt would have reaction if jesse was killed right in front of him. It was also to show his ties to chemistry. even if he has kids and a wife it doesn't make him hetero, and getting emotional over a friends death doesn't make him gay. it is what it is i guess. but i think if he was gay, then it would actually be a part of the storyline. which it doesn't appear to be.
