I like the threaded cane, but that shit must be much harder to play with. I see people talking about how the axe and saw destroy the bosses. Those same bosses basically walk right through the cane.

No. Enemies in different areas have a set level. Some areas are less powerful enemies than others.

Here's a hint to farm blood stone shards

In the chapel in Cathedral Ward once you open up the hidden path is a werewolf kill him and he drops not only a blood stone shard but damn near 1000 blood vessels. I have fought him 5 times in a row and he has always dropped a shard.

The axe does more damage, but the saw cleaver is so balanced it's ridiculous, easily the best starting weapon for new players. The cane is the best weapon, but it is for more advanced players.

I chose the pistol over the blunderbuss because it's easier to pull with the pistol, while easier to riposte with the blunderbuss(I don't riposte very much my weave game crazy). Neither do much damage.

there is a shield, but it is a cruel joke if you actually use it, completely worthless.
