The film is out this October.

Two months away from its highly anticipated release, Blade Runner 2049 has added composers Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch to write additional music for the film, Film Music Reporter points out.

Director Denis Villeneuve revealed the shakeup in an interview with Studio Cine Live, explaining that his frequent musical collaborator and original composer, Jóhann Jóhannsson, was still involved in the project.

“[Jóhann] composed the main theme as planned but, given the magnitude of the task, Benjamin Wallfisch and Hans Zimmer joined the team to help Johann,” Villeneuve said in a translation of the interview adding, “It’s hard to [follow] Vangelis!”

Zimmer needs no introduction, but Wallfisch has gradually made a name for himself as a protégé. In addition to being a member of Zimmer’s company, both are credited for music in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk and last year’s Hidden Figures.

Jóhann Jóhannsson No Longer Involved With Blade Runner 2049: Report

Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch were brought in as additional composers earlier this year

Jóhann Jóhannsson is no longer involved with Blade Runner 2049, according to Icelandic newspaper Fréttablaðið (via the Iceland Review). It had first been revealed in summer 2016 that Jóhannsson would be the film’s sole composer.

In July 2017, it was reported that Hans Zimmer and Benjamin Wallfisch were brought on to assist Jóhannsson. All of Jóhannsson’s contributions have now been reportedly removed from 2049. When reached for comment, Jóhannsson’s representatives replied, “Unfortunately due to a legal Non Disclosure Agreement Jóhann signed we’re not able to speak about this film at all.” Pitchfork has contacted representatives for the film for more information.

Can't wait for the Blade Runner sequel? According to the first journalists to see it, you're right to be excited.

"Good news!" tweeted Guardian scribe Jordan Hoffman. "Blade Runner 2049 is a terrific continuation and expansion of the orig[inal]."

Erik Davis from the movie site Fandango agreed, calling Denis Villeneuve's film a "sci-fi masterpiece".

"If you were worried, don't be," said Empire contributing editor Dan Jolin of the follow-up to Ridley Scott's film.

Out in the UK on 5 October, the sequel stars Ryan Gosling as a new "blade runner" on a quest to find Rick Deckard, the character Harrison Ford played in the original.

Jared Leto and Robin Wright also have roles in Villeneuve's follow-up, set 30 years after the events of Scott's 1982 film.

Simon Thompson, aka @ShowbizSimon, said the film looked "amazing" and had "strong" performances - but also said it had "flaws".

Yet Collider's Steven Weintraub had no such reservations, saying Villeneuve had delivered "a huge home run".

It wasn't part of the point of the first film. It does matter. Which is why each cut of the film is so different because in the end depending on if he is or not it pretty much makes it a completely different movie. It's not something that can be ignored. With that said I also hope this movie keeps it vague as to which cut of Blade Runner truly is "canon".

What's so great about these movies I never got into it

If you enjoy sci-fi watch and see for yourself.

Sidenote: there was a Blade Runner spinoff called Soldier with Kurt Russell that might be worth looking into if BR doesn't end up being exactly your speed.

Every first review I've read: five stars...

Some say it's even deeper in scope than the original

Roger Deakins killed the visuals. He's gonna win every award for cinematography next year

I'm booking tickets for the Friday screening on an IMAX cinema
