The goal Carter Woodson had when he started black history week was to highlight black accomplishments here in America, but I don't see the issue with discussing African history too if people want to.

SN: Woodson picked the first week of Feb to celebrate negro history week because of Frederick Douglass's bday.

I think this may have help answer my question.

Seems like a lot of people are voting on Culture/Heritage, but that connection is obvious. The question is, other than maybe Nelson Mandela, are there any African leaders (of Non-American origin) you hold next to Malcolm X, or Martin Luther King and celebrate their lives as you would X's, or Kings?

Unless you want to go into what tribes blacks came from and what regions and why certain tribes decided to sell off other tribes from Africa then it has little to do with the black American experience.

Africa is a very SMALL part of African-American history. It is simply the place our ancestors came from. Once they left Africa a whole new identity was formed. Like it or not black Americans have little to do with Africa.

Just ask Africans. They cant stand your black ass for the most part.

prolly because you say dumb shit like that.

only in America do African descended people try to ignore their roots

Agreed. But Africa has a great deal to do with Black Americans.

How so, other than it being where we were kidnapped from? That makes it relevant but lets not pretend it goes any deeper than "thats where we were kidnapped from...thats where Arab traders sold us after wars, etc."

Noooooooo bruh, we were sold. The Africans were complicit in the slave trade, empires were built on it (Asante/Ashanti).

I agree with your overall point. We are a different breed than Haitians or Nigerians and they are inherently different from us. In most cases we share skin color but no other cultural markings.

I don't see how it's bad to celebrate OUR history. Especially when you can be quite sure that very few of any Black Americans are in history books of other black majority nations.

That's a straw man. It's not about ignoring your roots it's about taking pride in what you have done.

Nkrumah definitely. Biko, Fanon, Cesaire, maybe Kenyatta.

These folks highlight the parallels we all share have as black and oppressed peoples.

Very important people to know.

Where are you getting this concept that people feel "special"? I don't think anyone has even used that word.

No all black people are not exactly the same but saying african americans are inherently different is too extreme and is a foolish statement.

Because there is no inherent difference between african americans and most other black people especially those in the dispora.

African history is relevant to all whom are descendants of it. Like anybody whose family is descended from any continent. The history is all equally important to who ever is appropriate.

But what America fails to acknowledge is that "African-American" history, a history that took place in the USA, IS American history. But niggas still ain't considered equal, so we have to celebrate separately. Black history month is like a slick remnant of some Jim Crow shit.

I see what they did there.

BIKO was the man. A man whos words were so powerful his oppressors banned him from speaking to more than one person at a time.

I know I can easily used google, but to get more knowledge flowing through this thread put me up on game. Who os Nkrumah? That name isn't ringing a bell at all.

Thanks.

Studying black American history without knowing African history is like studying a branch without knowing what tree it came from.

^^ black history quote

Most of you say we have no connection with Africans but forget that our ancestors carried Africa over here with them. Our ancestors didn't get blasted by one of those men in black flash thingies and start on a clean slate, albeit they were prevented from openly displaying lot of African culture. There was a thread here pretty recently that said the same; Africans were hanged for practicing vodun, their native religion. That's an example there of African history creating African American history. You cannot possibly begin to understand your ancestors without knowing their origin. Vodun went on to take many forms in America such as new Orleans voodoo.

Another example: American black music and dance has roots in African musical concepts. Peter Tosh said it best: no matter where you come from, if you're a black man, you're an African. This is not to say that brother and sister, father and mother do not have their own separate identities; we are, regardless, one family and should think that way.

sn: I know everybody has roots in Africa but the black experience is more immediate.
