This used to be more of a clear answer for me. These two have aged better then I could have imagined as their last albums have shown. I think Life Is Good was more important for Nas then MCHG is for Jay. I could flip a coin on this.

I used to think Nas was waaayy better. But now I think their about even. Like somebody else said, Nas's pen game is way better. But Jay knows how to dumb it down and reach the masses which Nas has trouble doing. I was listening to Jay's flow on "Girls, Girls Girls" the other day like 'got damn this nigga can flow' and the beat was perfect too.

When Nas is in his zone he's the superior MC but Jay picks better beats, sometimes perfect beats, and so his music reaches the masses. In the end I'd say its a tie with Nas winning by a slight margin (photo finish).

Shame on any nigga who says one is much better than the other, it' a very subjective argument and it comes down to what you prefer. I know I may catch flack for this but technically, Jay is better. Double Entendres, flow, metaphors, rhyme patterns, double entendres, all of that technical shit, Jay is out of this world. But when it comes to song concepts(metaphors on the large scale), painting a very, very vivid picture, articulating ideas, and being able to synthesize an idea and present it to you with an unlimited vocabulary and strength of intellect, then mix it down so you can see it out of your project window. NaS is the GOAT. Some days I prefer Jay, some days I prefer NaS. They're both incredible artists, and two of my favorites.
