To me, a car guy, it doesn't sound like your transmission. I'd say, spark plugs, oil change, check the Mass Air Flow sensor (MAF) would all be good places to start.

Could be fuel filter also that always used to make my el camino put and die....... he might need fuel injectors cleaned also
