Good rapper/average beats all day...For me to listen to a pants rapper the beat has to be super, super bangin'...
And to all the people sayin' most lyrical rappers' production is garbage...Jay-Z?...Andre 3000?...Mos Def?...Ghostface?...Pusha T?
Canibus and Immortal Technique aren't the only lyrical rappers out

Depends on how good the rapper and how average the production and vice versa. If it's Nas on a BMF beat that he kills or Ross on some of his hot beats, I'll take Nas as I personally like lyrics. But if it's Nas on an Eminem beat and Jay or Wayne on a Primo level beat, then they're fairly equal.

Why do people keep saying that Ghostface is lyrical. Just cuz a nigga spit nonsensical bars doesnt mean that he's lyrical. Most of his shit doesnt even make sense and im a huge fan of the Wu.
The rest that you named are the exception but still most lyrical dudes dont have a good ear for beats.

Honestly ill take an average skilled rapper (KRIT,Kanye)with varied subject manner over a good rapper with average beats (Nas and for the sake of new gen comparison J.Cole).Simply because that nigga is going out of his way to make up for his shortcomings and making his music a complete package

I think the success of PLIES proves that you can have an average MC with dope beats and it will work. before the rapper gets on the track the BEAT has to hook you first. if you like the beat and the rapper is fantastic then its gonna be a great one or possibly a classic. if the beat is murder and the rapper is average or worse the beat already got you.
thats what i feel about PLIES. that is a very, very, very slow flow hes like the MASE of his era but he gets away with that unimaginative super slow flow like hes just talking over the beat. but you put on a track like I GOT PLENTY MONEY and you wish you could hear T.I or LUDA on it and kill it

Hot beats and wack rhymes b/c the music is what lures me in since I'm super into instruments, drums, and the way the beat breaks down if the the beat is wack I'm less interested, and I only check out the record to get a feel for it lyrically and content wise then I'm off to the next record I do agree with an earlier post that production is subjective, but no song in my honest opinion is a classic with a weak beat hands down

Although production is very important.. if an artist is really nice with his pen game, that outweighs good beats to me. The beats are the background and the vocals are the focus of the track. Even though it's all vital, if I had to prioritize that's how I would do it.

I got quite a few songs where there is great lyricism on hot beats, but finding tracks like that are the equivalent of mining for gold. Perfect example is Talib Kweli on Gucci Mane's Poltergeist song. I got the track, nod to Gucci being Gucci, and then Talib comes through and puts it down like he should, and then back to Gucci. Best of both worlds: hot lyrics on hot beat.
Then there's Common. I play some of his songs occasionally despite having most them, and the only ones that get major burn have the best music (mainly BE). You can't "listen" to wack music with dope verses unless the mood hits. You can always "listen" to wack verses with dope beats.

i think that production is subjective....wats dope to me might be wack to others, I've stated b4 some of my peoples are huge ungerground fans and the production that these {its gotta bang in the whip} type cats dig gets shytted on by them and vice versa.....with that said i'll go with good rapper over average production
