Are There Too Many Features In Hip Hop & Do They Make Collabs Feel Less Special?

Collabs are definitely oversaturated.

Singles I can understand because that's the model.

I don't agree with it but I understand

Radios are probably more inclined to play a track with familiar artists being featured.

Pop That wouldn't have blown up like it did without Ross, Wayne and Drake.

Features just multiply the rate of success I would imagine BUT I can't understand when you have an album with 15 tracks and 12 of them are collabs. And not just 1 but like 3 niggas per song.

Its sad honestly

kats act like they can collab with who ever they want and it won't effect their status.

This is more of a mainstream problem.

I don't mind seeing underground features.

These mainstream kats portray larger then life then run around desperate for a name to latch onto.

IMO once your big your own skill should carry you.

you can tell the difference when its a thrown together manufactured attempted power move or authentic collaboration.

It's getting to a point where there are so many people on the same song, I don't know which artist the song belongs to.

1. That's why "The Symphony" was so ill back in the day. You had Master Ace, Craig G, Kool G Rap and Big Daddy Kane. That was epic

2. I remember when EPMD's Business AsUsual came out when I was a senior in High school. "Rampage" featured LL Cool J in his prime. That was GOAT at the time becaue there weren't very many collabos.

I always think about if I was a rapper and I had my debut album. My shit would have features but it wouldnt be who;s popular at the time but rappers I actually are fans of.

If I had a 14 track album I would have Kanye, Evidence and Curren$y on the same song, Vado, freddie gibbs, and cam and that would be it.

YES!

If a CD drops that I've been interested in for a while has a feature on every track I won't take a second look at it.

Big Clipse fan but I won't buy that Pusha album because of all the features.

Artists are just desperate now.

That Pusha album is fye pleigh boi.

!?

Kanye, Evidence and Curren$y on the same song would be interesting. I cant even imagine the kinda joint that would come from that.

But yeah, if an album or mixtape has too many features, like a feature on every song or over half the songs, I usually wont listen to it. Seems more like a compilation album to me, and I dont like compilation albums.

This is why I was personally interested when Kendrick put out his Control verse, thought we would see more competion and less collabs but nah.

Whatever hapenned to the days of featuring unsigned MCs. You know, guys from around the way that rap and don't have contracts. Those typre of features should work better because they're inexpensive. I mean, you can give your homie $50 to spit on a track and give him the industry standard royalty.

But if you have a big name artist (Rick Ross, Jadakiss, Drake, etc.) they charge like $25,000+ just for 16 bars. And dudes like Jay Z and Eminem charge more.

I'd get some guys from around the way, they might not spark any interest from the fans because they're unknown but they can still fill in on a posse cut so you don't get bored of the main rapper.

Yes. These rappers need to stand alone a lot more. Features are corny, R&B hooks are corny. They both ruin the artistic value of the song for me.
That's another thing I can't stand. Whenever a rap artist makes a serious song they always throw somebody singing on the hook. It gets irritating after a while.
