Who cares about "Backlash" if your job is to sell records and that "backlash" makes you more popular and you can sell even more records and get more attention, accolades and awards?? It aint even Backlash its controversy an artist best friend, but when it involves race you and your white friends get especially vicious.

Backlash for a black man in America is being Black-balled. Backlash for a white woman simply means support from the opposite end of the detractors.

Record companies care and so do the different share holders that are invested in these artists. One of the main arguments as to why rappers are afraid to offend the White man has to do with those record companies and share holder. Of course if it makes them more money, then it's all good. If things go awry, back lash could potentially end in being dropped and ultimately black ball. Personally, I could care less about controversy, skin color or anything else not related to the music.

You keep believing that you and Becky are equal when it comes to backlash for anything. Susan Boyle could kill a black man tommorow and get away with a slap on the wrist. Let you get into a domestic dispute with a blonde haired blue eyed woman and see where ur ass end up. No one is exempt from backlash, but lets not pretend that WE ALL get the same treatment for our wrong doing. This ain't just about record sales this is life.

I was trying to stay on the subject of music especially since backlash doesn't necessarily have to be the result of wrong doing.

I've been alive long enough to know that the judicial system is corrupt, I know that I wouldn't get the same treatment because not only are they looking at race, but it makes it easier for the courts when a person doesn't have the finances or representation to fight back.

Serious question. I've seen alotta ppl making assumptions that you wont sale unless you cater to the white audience in some way, do you believe this is true? A few websites I've been on today that are discussing The Monster video seem to be weary of the imagery Ye is using and that it will "offend" white folk. My question is simply do hip-hop artists today feel more obliged to NOT offend the white audience than ever before?? Should hip-hop care what the white audience thinks about the music coming from the genre? Discuss.

I love this thread..StillDreaming, I thank you for this...you and hrap are killing it, I agree with you 200% percent. Fuck it. OUR music that WE created is suppose to offend.

Artists like N.W.A., Ice-T, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, Paris, X-Clan, Tupac and Brand Nubian made that militant warrior music that white people were afraid of. With the exception of Nas, Kanye(subliminal) Lupe and a few others today we don't have those type of artists anymore because they want to cower and bury for the Caucasian dollars and audience..smh. That's why creative concept albums have suffered over gimmicks and accessibility.

Wow a lot of dumb shit is being said in this thread. Oh wait, I'm in the Reason.
First off that pic of Taylor Swift and that dude is not recent it was taken last year at Katy Perry's birthday party AFTER the VMA incident. How do I know this? I watch TMZ
Secondly SMH@ Hip-hop music being black music. The culture of hip-hop as a whole was created to give people who could relate to the struggle a voice to speak on their frustrations and a creative outlet. It didn't matter whether they were black, white, red or orange. If you could relate to the struggle and wanted a way to express yourself, hip-hop was for you. Hell, even the Beastie Boys got so much love back in the day. Just another case of people who don't fully understand the culture speaking on it. I swear I need to teach a class. Hip-hop is not only black music or black culture. Yea it was heavily influenced by black and urban culture but this music does not belong solely to black folks
