Breaking News: AJ Styles Leaving TNA

By Ryan Clark on December 8, 2013

A.J. Styles appears to be departing from TNA for the first time since the company’s formation in 2002. Styles’ current contract extension expires on the 16th of the month and he will be a free agent after that; he has already begun taking independent bookings.

Styles and TNA reportedly couldn’t come to terms on money; with the company trying to cut costs, the two sides have had a wide gulf in the amount of money they wanted the deal to be for and despite the two-month extension signed in October, they were unable to work things out. TNA was unable to offer Styles what he had been making and Styles, who felt he was a big part of the company and its brand, wouldn’t agree to a lesser deal.

The departure of Styles has reportedly “sent a bad signal” to other TNA originals who have deals coming up; the message is that the company will lose their originals if they can’t make a deal fit their financial requirements. Styles is moving forward with outside projects such as his autobiography and his participation in a speaking tour of the UK next year.

More as we get it.

UPDATE: As noted earlier, AJ Styles is not only accepting independent wrestling bookings in 2014, but is looking for regular bookings in the first quarter of 2014. According to reports, the reason for this is that AJ Styles will be officially parting ways with TNA next week. AJ has already reached out to ROH regarding a return if WWE isn’t interested. In the past, WWE hasn’t been interested in Styles. We’re told AJ is open to all indy bookings at this point. As you can imagine, numerous promotions are interested in him.

We’re told Styles will NOT be appearing at ROH Final Battle in New York City as the show takes place this Saturday, December 14th. At that time, he’s still under contract with TNA.

The current contract that Styles is under with TNA right now is set to expire on December 16th. As of December 17th, AJ Styles will officially be a free agent and can work anywhere he wants.

We will have more details on this story on Monday morning.

I bet if some shit like RKO were to get released on a 3rd strike from WWE, TNA will offer him a multi-million dollar deal with a financial stake in the company.

Just speaking hypothetically, but you know. TNA has an extremely bad history of overpaying for WWE/WCW castaways, and getting ZERO in return; then treat their own originals as if they're trying to steal from the company when it's time to negotiate a new deal.

The Kevin Nash's, Hulk Hogan's, Scott Hall's, Rob Van Dam's, Ric Flair's, even Kurt Angle's, of the wrestling world has come into TNA and financially pillaged that company to the point they can't even pay their ABLE BODIED and YOUNG talent. Not saying AJ is young in wrestling years, because he's damn near 40 himself, but he's able to put on a more visually stimulating match than any of the mentioned "legends" can today.

I have no idea why TNA signs these guys to the money deals they do; none of them have a fanbase that follows them, thus, that spike in the ratings TNA craves never happen. From jump, the signing is a bust if they can't even get over a .8 rating each week.

even tho there was a time tna was ruining him

ion wanna see him go to wwe for the same reasons as 10 years ago when it was a rumor

they WILL ruin him

if they dont ruin him off top by callin him J.A. Wild or some shit, wwe(maybe even HHH specifically) will bury him in ring, sad to say i truly believe they'd have him lookin like paul pierce on the nets

MY STATEMENT ON TNA CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS 12/16/13

Today for the first time in 11 years, AJ Styles awakes to find himself without a professional wrestling contract. I can't help but think how did I get here, what must I have done wrong, did I not deliver in the ring, etc. All of those are pertinent questions that any man or woman who finds himself or herself unemployed would ask.

I have always prided myself in being the wrestler that stays away from the things in this business that could easily destroy myself, my family, my marriage, and even my career. A wrestler who goes above and beyond to give the fans what they paid to see.

I move forward not bitter, but better for the blessings and memories that I have been a part of since TNA's inception.

When this contract renegotiation journey started several months ago, my wife and I began praying for God to close doors that needed to be closed and to open the doors that He wanted us to walk through. We asked him to prepare us for this journey and to help us to have the faith to be obedient to what He would have us to do. I am assured by the name Immanuel in Matthews 1:23 that I will never be alone. Hebrews 13.5, says He will never leave us or forsake us. There is a lot in this world that I am unsure of, especially in this moment, but there is one thing that I am certain. Contracts may expire, but the promise of Immanuel will never expire.

As my family and I move forward with my wrestling career, we will turn to Jabez's prayer found in 1 Chronicles 4:10.

Oh, that You would bless me indeed,

and enlarge my territory,

that Your hand would be with me,

and that You would keep me from evil.

My family and I are both grateful for the platform that TNA has allowed me to experience. TNA has been a blessing to our family for many years. We have made many friendships and many more memories. While you may not be seeing AJ Styles in TNA, you can be sure that he will be traveling the world and delivering many more Phenomenal matches. Visit AJStyles.org for a complete list of bookings.

Sincerely,

AJ Styles

Oh yea AJ signed to ROH. I think this is legit because he's scheduled for an on-air taping and I think since 2012 TNA has put it in contracts that you can't do that if you signed with them

I was beginning to think all these departures were a work Jarrett, Hardy, Styles all at the same time.

Maybe it's a mix and some guys are working and other guys aren't. Who knows these days

He needs to sign to WWE AND match with Punk and Bryan, that would be GOAT.

Too bad you have to be friends with either him or Cena to get signed.

Joe and Cena go way back. And i have yet to see a musclebuster anywhere near wwe rings ;)

Cena and Punk have actually both lobbied for Joe to go over to WWE. Joe just likes his gig over at TNA and doesn't bother getting out of his comfort zone. Not having to change his look and a less demanding schedule = more time to eat some twinkies.

Hardy is definitely a work but the other 2 seem legit. Hardy signed a two year contract last year. He can't travel outside the US and TNA is going on their UK tour so that was how they wrote him off TV.
