Ref got hands
In April 2 of 1982, a boxing match for the Australian super welterweight title between Alex Temelkov and Ken Salisbury turned into a massive brawl. The bout occurred in Sydney, Australia, at Sydney Opera House – the country’s most famous landmark.
The referee was Charkey Ramon (David Ballard) a former professional boxer and Australian national champion. He was considered one of the best of his time, in the 70s.
Ken Salisbury took the lead, landed a jab on the body and the head of Temelkov, which responded with unsuccessful hooks, but led to the clinch. With the arms around Salisbury’s neck, Temelkov started to punch the back of the head of his opponent, unsportsmanlike at its worst.
The referee stepped in to stop the coward and illegal move and suddenly, Bernie Hall, a well-known boxing trainer and manager of Salisbury approached the ring and grabbed Temelkov’s head. Instantly, Temelkov’s brother and trainer rushed in with a weird flying kick attempt against Hall, but missed it.
The referee grabbed the intruder in order to take him out of the ring. In the meantime, Salisbury got punched in the face by Temelkov. The referee held him, but released the angry corner man, which did not waste time: he hit Salisbury with a strong left cross and an uppercut.
The referee then lost his temper and as a former boxer himself, engaged in a brawl with the corner man, hit him with hard punches, and the whole place turned into a mess as more people stepped inside the ring.
