If you are trying to apply for loans and financing yes. The reason for that is because an American​ business has no jurisdiction over other countries. Meaning, if you lived in Paris and aren't an American citizen and some bank of America financial advisor gave you a loan and you decided to stop paying it tomorrow, they couldn't do anything about it because you don't function under American law. It's also to protect the bank from anti-money laundering and terrorism laws as well as they can track and prosecute the perpetrator.
