One thing that bothered me about Star Trek, besides the Prime Directive, is their misuse of the term 'sentient'. A 'sentient' being is an entity that has subjective experience; sensory perception, emotion and some basic or rudimentary cognition. They used to the term to describe beings who were more or less psychologically human. They should have said 'self-aware' except that would have inconveniently included non-human animals we already have contact with (like dolphins and elephants) and who don't have language (as far as I know).
