I'm rereading The Positronic Man by Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg (the movie BiCentennial Man was either based on this or on the short story that this was based on). I can understand how someone could think it was dryly written but I like it. I would recommend it if you're interested in science fiction. After this I might reread Wild Seed and Mind of My Mind by Octavia Butler.

I think it's wrong to assume that autistic people have low (affective) empathy. Not that I know a lot about the condition but I don't think autistic people are less sympathetic or compassionate, I think their problem is with cognitive empathy.
