Why would govt do anything to stop people from spending money especially in the consumer based economy of the US?

I could see a govt conspiracy where the govt downplays dangers so people dont panic and keep spending, but I cant see govt making it seem more dangerous than it is and hurt consumership

The people are going to spend money regardless.

I won't go so far as to say things being intrusive as urine samples, but defense and security contractors stand to make a millions if not billions off of selling security products (e.g., body scanners, etc) to all major hotel chains, malls, event venues, colleges, etc. These things are already being developed. The makers of these products just need the right reasons to convince companies that they "need them".

We live in what's basically a corporatocracy at this point. In some people's eyes the ends (innocent deaths) might justify the means (profits) .
