There are a million things to attribute to why they are having children so young in areas like that and so often. Usually areas like Frayser, and other highly populated black communities with middle to low income usually do not offer programs that stress the use of birth control nor is there such easy access to it like in more metropolitan areas. The church believe it or not is another large contributor to why the girls there are so ignorant to the benenfits of birth control. Misconception of cost is one reason, as well as trends in the area. Meaning if one group of popular girls are fucking and getting pregnant, then every girl is getting knocked up.

I hate to say this but.....that's just the way the Frayser area is....chicks over there make it a game to get pregnant first. Some are as young as 12 and 13....just starting their periods, and getting pregnant. Blame it on the environment, the lack of parenting (average age of the parent getting pregnant in that area is 16, do the math), or just plain not giving a fuckness....that's just the way it has always been over there.

my friend is from Jackson, and said girls down south start having sex young at like 11, and that alot of girls were pregnat or had abortions by the time they were 15, and that some even had kids, got married and divorced by the time they reach 22. So sad, I will NEVER want to live in the south, such a stupid backwards place.

Moving from the North to down South is definitely an adjustment...but I wouldn't go so far as to say the south is backwards as a whole. Granted, what you are seeing in this thread does reflect very poorly on Memphis, keep in mind that this is just a certain area of Memphis. The Frayser neighborhood is pretty much a high crime, low income area where many of its residents haven't graduated high school. Lack of education is a vicious cycle to break when you have nothing around to motivate you.

I will agree with your friend, however. The age of sexual activity down in the South surprised me, as well as the nonchalant attitude toward sex. But to say that this is an occurrence only in the South would be a misnomer. You can find these kind of stats in any low income area.

Great parenting. Parents are so quick to try and spook their kids about stuff by preaching and mixing in religion, but this is a straightforward approach that I can get down with.
