We were having this conversation back in the 80s. In 1984 Run DMC, Whodini, the Boogie Boys, UTFO and the Fat Boys all came out and silenced all the legends (Grandmaster Flash, Treacherous 3, Sugarhill Gang, Cold Crush, etc.) The only survivor from the original era was Kurtis Blow.

Then around 1992 a lot of the groups that were hot in the late 80s got replaced by a new generation. Groups like EPMD, Eric B and Rakim, Special Ed, Public Enemy and even NWA fell by the wayside and a new generation popped up.

Basically every five years or so a new generation comes up.

It makes sense because after you've been in the industry and you understand how it works, agents, angers and promoters won't work with you because you're too smart. They're looking for a dumb 18 year old who doesn't understand the business.
