You do realize in 96 Pac was one of the few multi platinum artist who was in their prime and had an actual discography. Most of the rappers from 88 on to the early 90s had in the eye of many had fell off. Rap was very young and the career span of a mc was 2 to 3 albums or the first wack album. What ever came first. Kane had "fell off" , Slick Rick was locked up, Rakim had just had a weak album and people felt he was falling off, G Rap was on hiatus. LL was hot and cold from album to album. And KRS was dope but didn't have the sales other rappers had. Ice Cube was doing his thing, but like many mcs I just name only rapped about a certain topic. Pac would do many songs with different subject matter. So when he was killed, not only was he multi platinum which many other rappers were not. He had touched alot of people and was still in his prime and had a catalog. All the mcs that were getting attention or was in the spot light were only on the first or second album. Nas only had 2 in 96, Common had 2, Jay-Z had 1 Biggie had 1, Snoop had 2. Meth only had 1 Red had 3. Quick had 3 and Ehit had 2 solo. So with 5 solo albums multiple songs with different subject matter, multiple hits and a hugh public persona, and millions of records sold, being the first major rapper to be murder would be enough to be given Goat. But in 2017 you have mcs that could do just about every thing Pac did and more with double sizes catalogs. If we are being truthful quite a few rapper surpassed Pac. It's only natural. Nas went on to have great subject matter, classic albums, sales, same with Common. Niggas have to understand its been 20 years. Hip hop has come a long way. Artists didn't stop growing after 96.

Haha so all these rappers fell off or put out wack albums...thats not pac's fault..thats their fault for not being on that level

In 2017 we haven't had another rapper who did what Pac did...i wish we would have more people make music the way Pac did

You missed the whole point. In the 90s Hip hop was still young. When you said who was the best, you didn't look at past rappers. It was about who was doing it right then. The media crown Pac the best rapper. Before he died, nobody said it, not even himself. But once he was dead, people took a look at what he had accomplished. And at that time no other rapper he done what he done. But there were mcs who were more talented out then. They just hadn't accomplished what he done then. Like Nas. Nas in 2017 has surpassed Pac. He rapped about everything from street life, the clubs, woman, balling, to social politics, Africa history, being married, having kids, while being super creative and making critical acclaim albums. Rapper are having 20 year old careers now. In the mid ninties Rakim was thought to be washed up. Now he's a Legend. You put him next to Pac and you have a discussion. But back in the 90s before his come back people looked at him like he fell off. People are looking at hip jop as a real music genre. It's not about who is the best in the moment. It's about who is the best in whole history to the present . Not saying Pac didn't deserve the title back then. But I think there are a few who really changed the game since then. And there are a few before Pac who didn't get the credit they should have gotten.

Why is this a poll? For the people who pick DMX....why isn't he a bigger icon haveif he the same content and was better

As far as being an icon it has to transcend time. Where Pac became a hip hop martyr so to speak, X is just a crack head.

Also Pac was seen as some kind of a conscious revolutionary, been in cult classic movies, career on an upward spiral. Someone ahead of his time and yet taken before he reached his peak.

Also people love a good tragedy story.

Dont see how someone who voted for X can make their case...it would have to be strictly music preference.

Wait he does have a point

Pac never had time to "fall off" or go batshit crazy like X did

He died on his best note...If X would died after 3 then I agree

Who to say if 2 Pac had lived he be as big of an Icon today? Biggie a hugh Icon too. If you're a top artist that died in your prime, you' ll be remembered as a icon. Heath Ledger is an icon because he died after a iconic performance in the dark night. But to be a rapper who been though a lot DMX still gets a lot of love.

And lets not forget X did movies too. At one time he was the # 1 artist. He was selling more than Jay-Z. He made Ruff Rides a household name. He change the whole direction of hip hop music from bling bling to the streets again. Not too many rappers did what X has done.

Yea X did movies but compare em to Above the Rim, Poetic Justice or Juice. Are they held in the same regard? What X do cradle to the grave amd that jet li, aaliyah shit? Very forgettable movies. Edit: ill give X Belly tho...1 cult classic

As far as changing the direction of hip hop, whos style/image was copycatted more....Pac or X? Biggie even surpasses X in that regard.

Not sure how that has anything to do with Pac vs dmx

But no rapper has captured what Pac did in their music and no one has passed him even in 2017...nas is my second favorite rapper but he's not on pac's level musicwise

Pac also did Never die alone. Very under rated film. I'm not talking about what everyone else did as far as copying Pac. Bigg had copycats too. But to be the front runner to bringing rap back to the streets. Thats big. He had Jigga dressing in street clothes again. Made the lox take off the shinny suits. He made street rap popping again. He made street rap commercially successful. After Pac and Big died, rap went the direction Big (or rather Puff) was taking it. Shinny suits rapping about cars, furs and money and being a player. Nobody was being a thug. Not until X took it back to the streets. Facts.

And bck145, no one ever bark like a dog and had the whole world loving it. X will have you wanted to kill a motherfucker one minute then tearing up the next. He had so much power in his flow. Stop being Greedy showed niggas how to manipulate your flow. (Meek took note.) He is a great storyteller. Better than Pac. He was a crackhead that made everyone want to be like him. He rapped with the best of them and was never sonned. X was more skilled than Pac, had more influence on hip hop while alive than Pac did when he was living. He even had a clone while he was on top. (Ja rule).

How does a whole generation of rappers wanting to be like tupac not pertain to his influence in hip hop?

Lol yea thats true but ja rule was accused of tryna clone guess who else first? U guessed it tupac. Thats why when g unit dissed him they made this track

Em and g unit were runnin shit at this point and they made a whole song biting pac to prove a point. Pac.....who was no longer living at the time.

Whos doin that with X now while hes still alive?

You make some good points and I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you. But just to add on:

There is a whole generation that grew up before the 90s. My older brother saw LL Cool J, Rakim and Public Enemy at the Providence Civic Center back in 1987 in front of 20,000 people. He came home and told me all about it. The following year my mother let me go with my brother and his friends back to the Providence Civic Center to see Run DMC, Public Enemy, Fresh Prince and Jazzy Jeff and EPMD. That was the summer of 1988. I was there along with 19,999 other people.

Rappers were going multiplatinum in the 80s. I was buying the records and going to the concerts. I was there.

I don't think Pac out shined everyone in that era. You had Nas making Illmatic. The Fugees going diamond. Das efx having the whole game bitting their style. Wu tang taking over the industry. ATCQ making 3 back to back classics all while Pac was in the game.

In the 90s Pac did not usher in the streets rap. Niggas been doing that.

Perhap people did imitate Pac, but from 97 to 00 it was called what? The bling era. Not the thug era. Some niggas try to sound like Pac, but more people who were successful took what Biggie was doing. Example Master P and everyone wear Versace. Drinking Moet and Crystal. Rapping about drugs. Thats what followed what happened after 97. Everything that was attached to Pac fell after he died. Deathrow, the Outlaws, Thuglife. Badboy and what Biggie was doing , Jr Mafia all that lived on.

And if you remember Ja Rule first singe was Holla. An super aggressive song more suited for X than Pac.

im going pac because i love pac since before he was famous. but i have to respect x too. they both did their thang but pac did it a little better. and like someone said earlier x was like the second coming of pac almost. but i cant like x could act his ass off n/h. when i seen king david....nigga......nigga it was ohhh veeee. i respected his acting chops with that one joint

I went to school in Providence for 2 years. They have alot of rapper come through and do shows. I remember Biggie, Redman and the Roots doing shows there. Also I enjoyed the Melle Mell thread. A lot of food for thought.

I think when we talk about the top 5 or top 3 we forget

about those 80s rappers. Its all subjective. I'm just made this post because you have people who go with the status quo and don't know or do the history. Alot of key mcs are left out when people talk about the history of hip hop. Alot of mcs have done some amazing thing before and after 96. Greatness can't be stop by a time period.

Youre right he didnt outshine everyone but he shined in the ending golden age of the late 80s-mid 90s hip hop. He was part of it and helped mold it....then came the shiny suit era. And when i say people copycatted tupac im not just talking about music but image as well. Another reason he is more iconic.

No he didnt usher in street rap but how many times did u hear "all these fake rappers nowadays wanna be pac"?

Not to take anything away from DMX bc this thread made me realize a lot of their similarities and that he doesnt get enough credit....he actually should be in a top 5 imo....i just dont think he has an edge over tupac.

(Ja rule).

I never said dmx was wack...dmx is one of my favorites....seeing in concert was amazing

But he was not a better rapper than pac, he was not more influential than Pac and doesn't have a discography as good as pac
