Why USC And Not A Black College, Dr. Dre?

Maybe some suspect that a historically black college or university would not have the breadth or depth of expertise on its faculty to spearhead an innovative academy. Nothing could be further from the truth.

This future Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy for Arts, Technology and the Business of Innovation is to be multidisciplinary, with a technology focus. In 2011, the National Science Foundation noted that black colleges are a major source of scientists and engineers. In fact, the top five producers of blacks who go on to earn science, technology, engineering and math graduate degrees are black colleges, as are 20 of the top 50. Once you add in the musical legacy of black colleges' choirs and marching bands, they are the perfect locations for an academy like this.

In the end, though, this is his money, and endowing a program geographically nearby, where he can have ongoing input and contact, makes sense. I do hope it will recruit and enroll a diverse class of students and not become some enclave for the already privileged student body there.

But more important, I hope this groundbreaking gift inspires other celebrities and musical artists to make similar donations to higher education. And that they will consider doing it in a manner that will be truly transformative. This gift is gravy for USC; for a black college, it would transform not just individuals but whole institutions and communities.

In the Detroit airport on my way home, I counted seven people sporting the stylish Beats by Dre headphones on the way to my gate. All seven were black men, like me. My own Dre earbuds were in my briefcase. I'm sure we all bought them not only to support Dr. Dre but because of the quality of the product.

My challenge is to figure out how to get Dr. Dre and others to listen as well, because when they support black colleges, they are also supporting a quality product.

Probably because there are no HBCUs in LA. At least not that I know of.

WTF DOES THAT HAVE 2 DO WITH ANYTHING?...HE TRAVELS 2 DO SHOWS IN OTHER STATES..HE TRAVELS FOR BUSINESS IN OTHER STATES...SO GIVING MONEY TO A BLACK COLLEGE IN ANOTHER STATE AINT THAT DIFFICULT

See the thread about this in the reason.

HBCUs don't want their money, go see what 9th Wonder (who is a professor) has to say about the relationship between hiphop and HBCUs.

Dumb ass whining artcle, anyone with a background in music can tell you Beats aren't shit.

Also Jimmy Iovine prolly fronted most if not all of money and neither of them have any responsibility to give money to bad schools just becasue they are historically black

That's a poor article. I agree with the premise but this person comes off as a whiny brat. Like he's hoping Dre will say something like "ok, ok... Here's 15 million for your troubles" or something like that smh.

When asked about why hbcu's are underperforming after Obama's commencement speech. The president of Morehouse basically begged alumni and the supporters of d-1 universities for more money and donations.

Successful "blacks" are not giving back.......

They are black republicans......

So not giving money to an hbcu means you are republican and are not "black"?

No.....

Because hbcu's get more donations from non-blacks................

A lot of black republicans run those HBCUs. Historically speaking a lot of those HBCUs were funded by white liberals back in the day. When blacks couldn't go to college with white kids, but like everything else when segregation was taken down support for HBCUs went down as well.

Alumni have dropped the ball, but its not like HBCUs have been in high demand either. I would like to see a statistic about how many black college students attend HBCUs, for some reason I don't think there are that many.

LOL @ bashing a man for where he sends his kid to school. The HBCU brand has been struggling for such a long time because we have allowed it to. Not partnering with our schools financially, assisting in recruitment efforts, and leveraging our business connections is the reason why so many of these institutions are challenged. I graduated from Mizzou and the black fraternities went on a 2 semester whining binge because they did not have the housing options afforded their white counterparts. Wonder why that is? (:| Meanwhile 8 out of 10 of them just joined to learn some funky lil dance.

HBCUs are just not the same HBCUs of our parents and/or grandparents generation. During their era, these schools were more serious about educating blacks and ensuring that we would be competitive and on track for professional careers. I can't dismiss the importance of these schools and a long term investment strategy to sustain them, but at this point, whose trying to send their child off to Dillard? Or Jackson State? Or Grambling? They need to get it together.

So only like 22% of black college grads graduate from an HBCU (w/ a bachelors), then it goes down for higher level degrees. I figured that was the case.

We don't got any black colleges up here in Canada. I wouldn't go if I were American tho, the fuck am I gonna do with a negro college on my resume?

I have a solution:

Non whites should stop attending D-1 universities........

This means all athletes (football).......

Instead of earning basketweaving degrees from and being discriminated against by the University of Alabama.....

These niggas should take their talents to an hbcu...........

In about 10 years one will win a national title......

And the financial problems will disappear..............
