Older films arent shot with HD cameras.

So the films are only upscaled to play on a HD TV.

This. You better off w/ a regular DVD unless you know the movie was shot w/ an HD cam

they still look better than dvd's. if you had a side by side compare you would see the difference. i just actually bought myself a 1080p lcd screen, and i watched nightmare on elm street 1 on the dvd i had for years vs. the blu ray version i just bought and there was a clear difference. granted its not as big of a difference as todays movies.

I understand, and I understand Halloween 2 by Zombie and movies alike shot with an 8mm. But how do you justify not shooting "up in the air" with an HD camera? Even that movie was grainy vs. sherlock holmes which I just watched and was crystal clear.

BTW I have an 1080p LCD.

I think I figured it out, something with the compression rates from theatre to disc. If anyone else has had this problem, the only solution to reduce the grain is to lower the sharpness on the TV.

You do realize that many films(catalog titles), should have Grain right?

I mean a movie like "The Godfather" on Blu-Ray should not look completely smooth. That would be unnatural.

It depends on the tv you have (a 720 or 1080p) and to have a HDMI cable. Also I think movies that were made before BluRays came about will not be so clear. Blurays are good for special effects, cartoons and colorful stuff.
