DMX. It's Dark and Hell Is Hot was enough to put him in the running, dropping another dope album in the same year just placed him at the top. Too bad he fell off so hard.

Just goes to show that longevity is key.

I felt guys shared the crown in the late 90's early 2000's there were no consensus "king" . In 97 it was Puff and Ma$e, in 98 it was DMX and Jay Z, 99 it was DMX, Jay Z and Nas.

mobb deep was over by 97 as far as bein kings of ny , they didnt make the type of music to run anything in the late 90's

Thread would have been better if you meant Jay-Z post 2003 era.

Who was campaigning for the crown in the Jay-Z post 03 era?

Every damn rapper in NY. Nas, Fif, Ghostface, Methodman, Fabolous, Jada, Cormega, Fat Joe. Everydamn body back in 04. At that same time, they were fighting a losing battle with the rising South and their dominance in the radio and club scene. They were fighting a battle on two fronts and lost both the next year. After that (05), Jigga contemplated on getting out of retirement cause the NY scene was suffering with the excessive beefing and all.

Lol none of the heavy weights cared for the kony thing at this point. That shit died after nas and jigga went at it

As Jamaica pointed out, the "crown" was pretty much shared after BIG's death. As a label/crew, BadBoy did what they could to hold on to it but imo, Puff (Diddy) just couldn't compete with the up and coming talent at Def Jam. Badboy had created the "Shiney Suit Era" and was successful commercially but had lost the actual feel of NYC. Def Jam as a label was more focused, their new artist at the time (Jay, DMX, Redman, Nore... etc) were holding it down. Nas and Wu could also be thrown in this argument.

The title of King of NYC was vacant. At that time, competing with the memory of Big was crazy. It wasn't until 02' and beyond where niggas - Jay, Nas, 50, whomever... were feeling themselves and claiming to be the next King. But as we all know, that title probably meant next to nothing as the sounds of South began to take over.

You can give DMX 98 just as a whole with Jay either arguably there or right behind him

I think if you really look back at Jay's 1999 you gotta give him the year

Nigga What, Nigga Who

Jigga My Nigga

Girl's Best Friend

Heartbreaker (Remix)

Do It Again

Blackout verse

Money Cash Hoes + remix

writing Still Dre

Anything

Hard Knock Life Tour

Backstage + Soundtrack

97 has to go to Mase or Busta since Wu is a group.

Uhh, you do know that DMX co-headlined the Hard Knock Life tour right? Backstage IS Hard Knock Life tour, just footage and both the flick and the soundtrack dropped summer 2000.

Writing "Still D.R.E." makes Jay-Z king of NY? Hilarious.

1999 X dropped his highest selling album, which btw outsold Jay-Z's. X had most of his singles out in early-mid 1999 from "Flesh Of My Flesh, Blood Of My Blood" and then Ruff Ryders dropped the compilation in april 1999. He dropped ""...And Then There Was X" late 1999 and had full of hits like "Party Up" which really broke him amongst the pop crowd, even tho the single was released 2000. Early 2000 he had all them singles, had movies, headlined Ruff Ryders/Cash Money tour and much much more.

Whay are yall basing this on? Popularity? Seems like yall go back and forth on the way yall base it. If Biggie was king of NY 1997 then it was clearly due to popularity and so on. If yall base it on popularity then 50 was basically king of NY from 2002/2003-2005 and so on.
