There are a number of factors that make something classic; the quality of the work and how influential it is are the two I look at most.

replay value
critical acclaim
consumer acclaim
marks a timeline in rap
usher in something new to rap and influences peers
perfect balance of good production and good songriting
It must have mass appeal, i don't want to hear that regional shit

Overall though, i use the timeline factor. When you look back at every year of hiphop, certain albums and songs captured peoples attention and mark a change in rap, that's how you know a album is classic along with the critical acclaim.

It's probably less than 30 classic albums ever to me though, there is a difference between a 5/5 album and a classic.

I think you can have an album which isn't a 5/5 and still be a classic; there could be albums which as a quality of work are better than some classics but it didn't have the same impact and whatnot. Saigon's new album for me is an example of this; great piece of work but I don't think that I'll be seen as a classic. Who knows though.

But where do we draw numbers?

If you can influence a million ppl with a mixtape where does that put you?

If you influence 500,000 with your album where would that put you?

What determines quality?

Better yet who determines quality?

Whats classic to you could be garbage to me

Oh, definitely. It does come down to opinions because we each have different tastes but I guess if there is a larger number of people who agree with one opinion then that is more likely to be deemed as a general classic as it were. As for mixtapes, I don't really know for that because I don't think a mixtape can be compared with albums and people get rated at the end of the day by their albums...

You also like men though. It's the same thing. There might be you and maybe another nigga lurkin around here who is gay. The rest of us are straight. It's the same with you thinkin Illmatic is not a classic, but the majority of us knowing and accepting that it is.

Depends on what type of mixtape it is, if it's a Budden type mixtape where it's all orginal material then i definetly think it can be classic. (not saying Buddens have any classics or anything) I don't even fuck with or give these mixtapes where niggas are using other niggas beats and concepts the time of the day, how can you create groundbreaking shit when you are using other niggas formula.

Quality is determine by replay value!

Time determines quality!

That's why time, critical acclaim and consumer response determines quality and not just your opinion. If that was the case, some random ass no name painter would say their paintings are on the level of of a Picasso.
