I think it's going more towards the music nowadays since nobody goes platinum anymore, people ain't buying that bullshit nomore so that means artists have to step up their game and make better albums

Its been about sales and thats whats killing hip hop.. Nigga's are going out they way with starting beefs, and gimmicks, or publicly stunts to bring in more bread.

I think Jigga had sumin to do with this when he said "Men lie, women lie, numbers dont.." .

Respectfully, Jay can say that shit cause he's a hip hop great.

But its these younger cats and some of the older dudes that try to prove they got numbers, and put out commercialized bullshit.. (Perfect example: Carter 3)

Its about the music.

Music can't be compared to sales at all.

Wayyyy back in the day, folks weren't making music to sell, they were making music to express themselves and enjoy the essence. Nowaday's, particularilly the hip-hop indusrty, it's about sales, and that's a sad fact yo!.

It's sales, but me personally I would like it to be about the quality of music, these whack rappers be putting out shit I haven't been buying CDs by new artist for a number of years now because of it, I only be buying albums from artist I been listening too.

Same here, I have't been copping anything by the new artists, and its kinda fucked up because some are a lil decent but they get overlooked because of the other wack rappers that have lead us to put them on the shelf.

By the way your top five rap artist is pretty decent, minus big, and jay I"d have them as honorable mentions ha.. no pun intended.

The only new artist album I might buy this year is J-Cole's, his mixtape The Warm up was nice. Dude can spit far better then Drake, but he gets no buzz at all.

See i don't even know who j-cole is.. but if you put me on it, then I'm all open minded for it.

A lot of artists that have potent are actually getting no play..

Numbers don't mean shit. Just because an artist sells doesn't mean their material is actually worth buying.

Making money in the entertainment industry is over-rated.

There are more stupid mofos than there are sensible ones.

Mathematically, more sales equals more dumb people buying your material.

Appealing to a fad in order achieve that isn't success.

Quanlity > Quantity. Period.

combo of both, after all it is the business of selling music. The only people who will say sales doesn't matter are rappers and fans who don't sell shit. If you ever signed a record contract you wan't to sell albums. There are artist out there that show you can have both, you just have to find the balance and have that certain something to appeal to people.

I'd rather my favorite artist focus on releasing quality material...and not worry about selling records.

The overall quality seems to decline when an artist intentionally tries to appeal to top 40 radio.

its sad but that's just the way things happen in life. Back in the day superstar athletes had to have summer jobs because they didn't get paid as much now sports has turned more into a buisness and with more popularity of sports came more profits and things arent the same. Companies like Dell started off with great customer service and great deals...now they have shitty customer service cut corners to save money to make more money. Same thing is happening with hip hop it used to be about depth, quality, and being you. Now its all about creating the illusion of an image making slick song to suck your emotion versus telling a story to hustle you into buying a cd or track to make money (at least mainstream music). When it came to rap 15 years ago it was about sharing your story from the hood nowadays most music is about using the hustlers mentality to make money so the music quality has sufferd

The companies only care about sales; the true listeners only care for te quality

I like this thread as most people use the sales argument for a certain group of manstream rappers as a basis for how good they are then when you break down the truth on sales with other sales example(Vanilla Ice is a good one) they seek another umbrella...

the quality means more than quanity if i may say...cause for one why would you want to sell so many records and your music sucks when it comes to comparing it with the big dogs?

I whole heartedly agree, I would rather be proud of what I put out knowing it is a quality item...
