Howard school officials respond to student's racist video

In an email to parents yesterday, Howard County Superintendent Renee Foose wrote that she was "deeply saddened" by a video of a Mount Hebron High School student making racist remarks about African-Americans and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Foose writes that the video, which she describes as a "teachable moment," has been posted on social media and shared hundreds of times, "offending many people of all races, and reflecting poorly on students directly involved and those who chose to stand silent. This behavior is unacceptable and will not be tolerated."

Facing the camera, the student in the video says, "Black Lives Matter? I mean, seriously, who the [expletive] cares about some black man who dies?"

Black lives do not matter, he continues, because "they're an inferior race, okay? Does anybody really care?"

At the end of the 30-second video, the student points to the image of Abraham Lincoln on a $5 bill and says, "This guy is a traitor to the white race."

The student has since apologized on his Facebook page, writing that what he said was "racist, ignorant and overall an awful thing to say and to do.... I hope to learn from this mistake as well as not let it define who I am as a person."

According to Foose's email, Mount Hebron's principal and members of the school administration are investigating the incident, and conferences are being scheduled with the involved students and their parents.

Asking parents to participate in her "call to action," the superintendent writes, "Take a stand and refuse to share the video, and delete any copies. This is more than an example of an irresponsible use of social media. It is hateful. No Howard County public school student should engage in this type of conduct, nor do they need to be exposed to it."
