Mac addresses aren't part of the internet.

In the 7 layers of the OSI model, MAC addresses are part of the 3rd and 4th layers. Websites and web browsers are the mythical 8th layer. We don't have access to physical card addresses.

I'm looking at stuff we get in the request and I'm not seeing the mac address. The mac address is also something that's even easier to spoof than the ip address. And, unfortunately an Internet where we could perma-ban people would have a tonne of negative repercussions elsewhere.

I guarantee you there's no way for website software to ban MAC addresses, but even if there was, like Todd says its even easier to spoof a MAC than an IP. I like Uptown's idea of banning anonymous email providers. Even then though, its pretty easy to create a gmail address.

I think Todd is right: the real way you win these kinds of battles is by making the other party not want to play anymore. Make it boring for them to try and troll. Discourage them by hiding their posts from the start, etc. We've got some stuff coming that should help with this.

real providers like gmail are starting to crack down on B S email addresses. like adding 1 digit to a preexisting account etc etc but i see what you mean. but to create a new email AND new IC account everytime you get banned has to be a hinderence LOL

but like icy is saying a way to set an account to need every post approved is a great way to make someone tap out. the only down side is that your playing the game right with them

And we don't want to do anything that will make the experience suck for the good users. That's always something to remember.
