Thou Shall Not Bear False Witness....

I agree with you TS. There is a lot of misinterpretation and biased reading of the Bible that I believe does a great disservice to the faith. Christianity is under attack these days, but I fully believe that Christians are the reason for that.

There are a lot of people who innocently believe or misunderstand things too. It's sort of like the line you used to title this thread. So many people translate that to "Don't lie." But that's much broader than the actually commandment is supposed to be. Bearing false witness is literally accusing someone of something you know they didn't do. The jews had a court system, and there were no cameras, audio recordings, or DNA tests back then. The most important and damning evidence was witness testimony. Therefore appearing in the court and saying you saw someone do something when you know you didn't could have very grave repurcussions. That's why bearing false witness was a great enough offense to be included in the commandments. Now I'm not saying lying is good, but there is a distinction. Telling a little white lie to save someone's feelings or avoid undo stress in certain situations is not the same thing as bearing false witness.

It depends on what they are trying to get you to believe about their interpretations of the Bible.
