PLAYBOY: It is true; a lot of rappers love you. You recorded with Common and Kanye West, played live with Jay-Z.

MAYER: What is being black? It’s making the most of your life, not taking a single moment for granted. Taking something that’s seen as a struggle and making it work for you, or you’ll die inside. Not to say that my struggle is like the collective struggle of black America. But maybe my struggle is similar to one black dude’s.

PLAYBOY: Do black women throw themselves at you?

MAYER: I don’t think I open myself to it. My Dick is sort of like a white supremacist. I’ve got a Benetton heart and a fuckin’ David Duke cock. I’m going to start dating separately from my Dick.

This may not belong in this section but since a few hip hop artist were referenced in the article I wanted to discuss this with some HIP HOP heads (well those of you who make sense and think logicallly).

Just a couple of days ago there was a topic about rappers doing albums with no profanity. I'm going to go ahead and throw the n-word in there with every other cuss word. NOW that hip hop is mainstream and there is a growing number of non AAs (arican americans) listening to hop hop do you think hip hop artist carry a responsibility with using the N word. I think rap music desensitizes the word and it doesn't seem like such a big deal to use it. HOWEVER it is still a very sensitive issue in our community. I remember being in a white bar and Kanye's Golddigger came on and the crowd went nuts... WE ALL know how the chorus goes and the crowd was singing along HELLA loud and not censoring anything. Now does it make sense for this to be a controversy when we use it so freely in music ...

Speak on it...

Alot of our Folk (Black Folk) r ignorant of the Us of the word Regardless..........U cant Execpt Hiphop Artisst to Act in a Conscious matter when alot of them r actting ignorant (Gucci, OJ, Rick Ross, Jim Jones, Lil Boosie, Cam'ron, YaYo this list can Go on). U cant expect them top have that Responiblyt When our on Genre is allowin Suspect shit to slide and eevrything (Dudes lyin about they past, False Claim Gangs). All this Adds up, this wats happens When u let shit slide under the gusie of "Entertainment" and shit like that. When u have Us acttin crazy, then Other Culture Feel its cool top act whateva, Case in Point, the new phenomen of WHite folk think its cool to say "Nigga" all the time, esp when they Not even remotely from the hood

first things first...HUGE fan. I Own just about every Cd or DVD John Mayer has put out.

that clipping you isolated is maybe the truest thing said by a celebrity in a while, just that he worded it wrong. Black people have struggled (still are) and as Chris rock said "Black people have to FLY... Where white can just walk to" and cant afford to take a rest when we're on that pursuit for happiness and success so. IMO what JM said was right, but since it came out of a white man's mouth (Who has a HUGE black audience) its considered racist. If it came out of a black man's mouth, it would have been considered either politically incorrect or ignorant runnin of the mouth. so you choose the lesser evil.

there is still a sensitity around the word. remember the whole thing with Nas? but at the same time being a "nigga" has almost come like, through hip hop like being the cool guys in high school. so while its not as bad as 20 years ago, its still a sort of a taboo.

now if you excuse me, Im gonna go play Battle Studies (JM's latest album) and forget about this whole misunderstood fiasco

smh u niggas worry about the DUMBEST SHIT smh

again I asked for people who think logically.... I personally was not offended by what he said... I'm a John Mayer fan and I understand his sarcasism.. however many folks are pissed at his use of the n-word.. the same folks who use it and listen to rap music thats contains it.... so again why do we use it so freely (esp. in music ) if we are so sensitive about it being used universally.

If black people don't want the word 'nigga' used then black people should not use it. No race owns a word and to call each other a slave name is degrading in and of itself. No, that word should never be used by blacks or whites or any other race or creed. Yes, using this word does desensitize it. No, John Mayer is not a racist, he just has a loud mouth.

This is all assuming that black America is striving for equality.

my bad I was at work and was trying to post quick... here is the n-word part

PLAYBOY: Because you’re very?

MAYER: Someone asked me the other day, “What does it feel like now to have a hood pass?” And by the way, it’s sort of a contradiction in terms, because if you really had a hood pass, you could call it a ****** pass. Why are you pulling a punch and calling it a hood pass if you really have a hood pass? But I said, “I can’t really have a hood pass. I’ve never walked into a restaurant, asked for a table and been told, ‘We’re full.’"

A white man getting too comfortable and using the word "******" while having a conversation with other (presumably) white men barely qualifies as news. I don't understand why stuff like this surprises people

In that same statement he also touched on the fact that 'hood' people are often demeaned and implied that such an act would be morally incorrect. If it's so degrading for a white person to say 'nigga,' why do rappers frequently use it? You don't see mexicans running around calling each other wetbacks.

I think the problem lies in the fact that black society has their role models all fucked up. No one looks up to MLK Jr. anymore, they look up to Lil' Wayne and Cam'ron. As much as I like their music, I don't see these people as positive black role models and definitely have a problem with children listening to their music. If an impressionable child idolizes Cam then he or she will grow up to be a drug dealer; that's a fact. And the responsibility is with the parents, also, allowing their children to listen to this, that's just lazy parenting.

Within this strive for money, black society has managed to hold a thumb over itself. The determination to achieve financial stability and/or excess has made it more difficult for the men and women that grew up idolizing these rappers to attain the same fiscal comfort, UNLESS they grow up to be rappers. That's why I don't buy rap albums, I don't want to support this bullshit, I just want to smoke my blunt and listen to my burned CD.

Exactly. End of the day if black people cry when white people use the word 'nigga' then we should stop using the fucking word in the first place. Maybe then white people and everyone else will follow suit. John Mayer sounds like he was being sarcastic (not that I even know who he is), nothing to get upset about
