Taser Em All, Let God Sort Em Out
For the second straight game, a Philadelphia Phillies fan took it upon himself to become part of the game. Without a doubt he was inspired by the notoriety gained by the tasered teenager who was the topic of discussion on both the local and national news the day before. Perhaps he was also inspired by the narcotics found in his possesion. Whatever his muse, he avoided the taser treatment inflicted on his predecessor and the Philadelphia fans avoided another possibly catastrophic incident.
After the 17yr old fan was tasered and removed from the field during Sundays game against the Cardinals, much of the debate has been about whether or not the police used excessive force. Many argue that he was just a harmless kid who was caught up in the moment. He was unarmed and, while avoiding apprehension, wasn’t endangering the players nor any of the other fans. He really had no where to go after leaping onto the field and could have eventually been brought down by less extreme measures. My response to that argument: Are you really willing to bet 40,000 lives on what you percieve to be a “harmless kid”?
Think about it, just one day earlier, the nation avoided a terrorist attack in Time Square due to a street vendors awareness and good old fashioned luck. In a world in which we cant board a plane without taking our shoes off, we should all realize our safety and security is constantly threatened. Rather than condemming the officer for using a taser on a fan, perhaps we should be commending him for his quick reaction. Not to sound like George Bush, but the forces of evil are all around us and there is no way to tell the difference between a terrorist and a stupid kid in enough time to prevent a loss of lives.
The athletes themselves should also take these situations a little more seriously. Instead of laughing behind their gloves, maybe they should think about evacuating the area. There is already precedent for fans attacking and injuring athletes, remember the Monica Seles stabbing? Im not suggesting they take it upon themselves to take out the trespassers, but maybe they should come out in their support for security using tasers to ensure their safety.
Anyone that steps onto a field or court during the middle of the game is either a threat or extremely stupid. Sports are competitive, adrenaline inducing events played by very large men. Anytime a person crosses from spectator to part of the action they are stepping into a lions den. Think back to the “Brawl at the Palace” and how the whole situation could have been avoided if that fan didn’t decide to throw that legendary blue cup. How about the fans that rushed the court only to realize that Jermaine O’neal really is 7ft tall and punches like it, you think they learned their lessons?
People will undoubtly point to alcohol as a cause for people jumping on the field, and while it is a valid point, beer and sports are married and aren’t gettign divorced anytime soon. Instead we have to look for other deterrents to keep people in their seats. If 50,000 Volts of electricity and the embarrassment of pissing on your self in public isn’t a a deterrent I don’t know what it. Instead of criticizing cops for excessive force, make it clear that if you step onto the field this will be the result. Not only will you be arrested but you will be electrocuted, no questions asked. Now are you really trying to create a buzz?
