5th Letter- Besides it being a stress reliever what made you decide to start writing?
BlackAX410- I wasn't fond of mainstream hip hop too tough so I felt a message of being yourself was needed to be put out there. It's a misconception that being real is strictly being in the streets but that gets a lot of young kids in situations they're unprepared for so I wanted to do comedic rap initially then I wanted to progress and make conscious type tracks. It was about 5-10 serious songs I wrote during my teenage years that I recorded a few years after the fact because I felt my style wasn't refined enough to execute it the way I wanted to. It took me like 3 years before I got into a studio but my flow was abysmal for a minute cuz I was trynna find myself. My 1st album was recorded on a $15 computer mic that short circuited so I had to hold it upside down and hang it over my friends door with no headphones and a trash ass program. The beat was drowning me out on almost every song but I sold almost $300 selling that album. I can't even listen to my high school music without cringing now tho lls. I've grown immensely as an artist since then tho, and honestly I'm not as bad as some people make me out to me it's just hard for some heads to rock with me cuz my style is so unconventional. But I accept critique good and bad I never feel I'm a finished product it's always room to improve it just sucks I can't get my message across because the only music that gets play in Maryland is trap rap and rapping about killing. I feel it's too generic I usually try to have 5 different topics on a project I'm on cuz I'd never wanna be a redundant artist. You already got way too many "once you heard one of their songs u heard em all" niggaz in the game I just wish I had a bigger fan base and platform brothamam
5th Letter- Who are some rappers you emulate or influenced your style?
BlackAX410- Top 2 are mystikal and Busta rhymes, their energy combined with their lyrics and how they were able to entertain always captivated me. When I wanna harmonize I'll put on bizzy bone to grab ideas, when I wanna rap aggressive I'll put on lord infamous MJG and juvenile. When I wanna make comedic tracks I'll throw on Redman. All those guys had a hand in my style I feel I have a unique sound and don't wanna be considered a biter. When I wanna get lyrical I call that style the black AX attack, when I wanna go the harmonious route I call it AXELICIOUS swagger trynna serenade a bitty with a silky uncle elroy Versace shirt and a varnell hill 8 ball jacket and sing the draws off ya auntie high notes and all lls. Then I got the throwed off flow when I'm animated while throwing out punchlines jokes and still try to remain lyrical. I always wanna be relatable without putting on an image, being versatile while staying in my lane I feel like my influences did a good job of doing that but I want my own identity
5th Letter- What are your favorite songs that you've done and why?
BlackAX410- Damn i gotta think this through cuz I have 8 albums of material so I'ma narrow it down to 5. I despise a lot of songs I made years ago so most of it is mainly newer material lls.
1. Stay True- This song is a true story that happened to me and my friend in 2013 with someone we thought we were cool with. We were all smoking next thing we know an undercover pulls off and a cop comes up to my car put us in cuffs and searches my ride and finds the rats work. The cop walked away and dude asked us to take the charge for him cuz his older brother was a CO I was like FOH bruh my car gonna get towed i got the most to lose and we smoked my weed already lls. Its fucked up my boy did jail time off that setup but dude got 2 years for an unrelated weapons charge so i didnt have to retaliate. This is one of my favorites because i had to jump right into the track and it was a boom bap beat which usually doesnt fit my style but I felt i made it work and told a story pretty well on here.
2. Lord Help me- Me and my older brother who's a Christian spoken word artist collabed on this. It was my idea I wanted an introspective track basically showing people who feel like they're at the end of their rope to not give up and try to seek solace or comfort with someone, if you search hard enough there will be someone willing to help you so dont commit suicide you got something to live for. It's wild cuz my life went downhill right after this I was kinda talking about myself unintentionally cuz I was in a dark place last year
3. Blazin in Amazement- Smoking track that we had fun on the beat just makes u wanna roll up extendos lol, I toned down my aggression on this one and felt this coulda got out there a bit more we just didnt market it correctly unfortunately. Probably my most mainstream friendly type song. Always got a great reaction when we performed this even got a standing ovation in NY shit was wild lls.
4. Valued- I got pulled over on 5 different occasions in 2015 so this song had been brewing for a while. It was times i'd leave the gas station and head to my car and I had cops following me up until i unlocked my door so this song was brewing for a while. I recorded this 1 week before the Freddie Gray incident then the riots took place so I kinda get an eery feeling everytime I hear it. I was frustrated but I wanted to instill confidence in young black men to show em that we have a voice and opinion. "I'll never be content and settle for mediocrity/To see all this wasted potential is an atrocity/ When trouble comes are you gonna fall by the wayside/ Or will you stand strong and display black pride/ No Matter what show em black lives matter/ Dont let the enemy win and leave your thoughts scattered" that was just a piece of the 3rd verse the whole song I just wanted to instill confidence in our youth cuz the media and the world in general tries to keep us down.
5. Team DAR Come and Get It- I fell in love with the beat soon as I heard it I think equally we all did our thing I knew I had to become extremely animated on this one but this is one of our best songs collectively IMO. This whole album was dope but this and Good Times were prolly the standout cuts on our Leviticus album
