A LOT of rappers are doing nothing but perpetuating stereo types, catching gun cases and some even make music for the sole reason of getting paid without thought of the image of hip hop as a whole.

Are there any?

I mean in order to find the Positive role models you have to look past their lyrics sometimes. Because I know alot of cats will be quick to name the obvious 3: Mos Def, Common, Talib Kwali. But even they may be on some other shit once they step off stage. I met Mos def in Seattle after a show, and this nigga was asking where's the weed at? So it really is something that's deeper than rap to be a good role model.

hip hop is dense, WIDELY diverse, and damn near inexhaustible...its a worldwide thing...

now if all YOUVE encountered is "stereotypical" music, then thats a personal problem. If one subjected themselves to nothing but donald goines novels and tried to castigate literature based off of that, would he/she be taken seriously? NO, THEY WOULDNT

just like there are more books than whats displayed on the front shelf of barnes and noble, there is more hip hop that whats being advertised on a mass level....

so again, if all u come across is "stereotypical" stuff, its a personal problem

the fuck you talking about? Thanks for totally not answering the question.

The question has nothing to do with me. I asked if YOU think there are any positive role models in Hip Hop?

The "personal problem" seems to be with reading comprehension. The T/S typed "A LOT" of rappers he didn't say All rappers.

that whole compile a list of positive rappers route is inane.
If someone didnt have he integrity to actually study the artform before casting shadows, why would u consider their criticisms?

as egotistical as hip hop ACTS like it is, it has low self esteem

why yield for someones approval & validation when its obvious that they have scant knowledge of what they are trying to criticize

in other words, NO POINT IN GOING THE OLE "this rapper is positive, and that rapper is"

all that is for is oprah oreily type crowds...why give a fuck?

To answer the question the T/S posed I would say that YES there are many "positive" role models.

I appreciate the way that J Cole carries himself and Lupe is extremely intelligent and articulate.

9th wonder is reppin the culture in a positive fashion teaching music theory at a University.

David Banner is a qualified spokesman for the culture.

Rev Run is always on point with his wisdom

Ice cube has shown how to balance marriage/family with the rigors of stardom

Jay electronicas respect for the art form is evident.

I think there are many hip hoppers who young up and coming artists could look at as positive role models and I wish the older artists would do a better job mentoring these young artists so they can avoid some of the pitfalls that T.I , Boosie, and other rappers have fallen into.

Kendrick Lamar!!!

i could name several legends but all the young fans gonna do is try to poke holes in it. I'll just say there are quite a few that rep hip-hop that you never hear about going to jail, abandoning their kids, robbin or selling dope so I'm not even gonna fall into the trap. Nobody cares about that shit tho.

J. Cole is a nobody.

Lupe is just another fake "smart" rapper with nothing to say.

9th Wonder is a nobody.

David Banner is a hypocrite.

Rev Run is washed up.

Ice Cube never had "stardom" LOL

Jay Electronica stole all his rhymes.

Lil B is the only real role model in rap today.

that wasnt trolling. it was a legitimate response. It wasnt a dead on direct response, but a response nonetheless. This "hip hop role model" topic comes up all the time...i just wanted to throw that out there. You didnt have to flip out on me
