on the real, i agree. no one can come close to eminem in terms of flow, wordplay, originality. look at forever with drake, kanye, wayne. he took what are supposed to be some of the best mainstream rappers and took them out of contender status to simply sparing partners. no one comercially sucessful is touching him and it is yet to be seen if anyone in hte underground can compete either, but that is kind of beside the point. im sure someone could give him a run for his money. i would like to see him battle nas or kool g rap or someone like that. i believe he has skills on par with goat considerees. his problem is not his skin color, he has bypassed those concerns i think. he still has an "other" staus that he needs to overcome, like rapping in a swedish accent, rapping about serial murder, homophobia, drug addiction rather than more conventional subjects. not to say he needs to rap about "blunts an broads, menage a tois, sex in expensive cars" etc. but if evey track were like forever or renegade (because we all know his flow is usually that good on every track) he would already be there. he has carved hs own niche, no doubt, with these subjects, but he is alienating the hip hop community with a style like he has. we need to see him grow up a little first, flow or no flow.

or make a hip hop classic without any cringe worthy moments like fack or perhaps some of the songs on relapse. give us rhymes that will shock us, not rhymes about shocking subjects. nahmeen?

slang_doctor is correct. em's problem is his subject matter versatility. but honestly, i think he does this on purpose. he raps about messed up things b/c he actively hates the limelight. in the middle of the 2000's when em was blowing up, he deliberately moved out of the spotlight. then he comes back, but starts rapping out about the most repulsive subject that will guarantee he gets few spins (3AM), and comes out with another song about wanting to be left alone (beautiful). he probably hates having the label of 'the best' because honestly, he works better as the outsider or the black sheep. think about it, he's been the black sheep all his life, so how else is he gonna live?

jay-z is on the exact opposite side of the spectrum. he not only loves being the golden boy, he revels in it. i mean, jay-z is performing at city hall next to elected officials, representing sports teams during the nba draft lottery, marrying beyonce, and doing budweiser commercials. i think this is why his lyrics have become more and more mainstream. jay-z has the 'bright lights, big city' mentality, whereas eminem never wanted this and actively despises it.

i'm not knocking either of them, i'm just saying its obvious that they reacted to the limelight in completely different ways.

i agree, arbitration. part of what is wrong with hip hop is when it comes to goat consideration, we consider who is most popular instead of who is most talented. sometimes it may be hard to listen to eminem, but he is way more talented than your average favorite rapper's favorite rapper. jayz on the other hand is quite popular, has more number ones than elvis etc. but in my opinion he does not belong in the top five doa. (he's not in mine). i think you are right in terms of eminem shunning the mainstream spotlight for the most part while jayz revels in it

i don't know what it means in terms of who is best, but both their names are on the dj hero video game. they both have their own lanes, with differnet fan bases but ultimately it is a matter of opinion. the fact that eminem is considerd on par with jayz in the mainstream deserves goat consideration, tho, considering all the jayhovas witnesses who want to call jay the greatest of all time.

When em is on his game there cant be many better. I know people want him to make a classic. In my eyes he already has made one. But they expect so much out of him because of his skills.

The torch should be passed to someone who raps about real life, not to someone who makes clown music. That trash Encore was one of the worst albums last decade, but 7 million sheep still ate it up and loved the fart/puke noises. Infinite was just a rip off from Nas/AZ's flow with mediocre production, and Relapse it just a tired, monotonous, half-assed retread of topics he covered from a decade ago, but also delivered in a corny accent. He hasn't been able to make a hot album since 2002 - that's eight years, so why are we passing the torch to someone who's fell off? Nowdays, when he's not rapping about getting fucked up the shitter by his stepdad, he can't find anything else to rap about other than his mother or daughter because he's too limited and one dimensional. Sorry, but good multis aren't enough to be considered the GOAT.

]Everybody wants to be the greatest rapper alive. Eminem's not even my favorite rapper, but why can't we pass the torch to him. He's lyrically better than most rappers. He's the only rapper to get 2 diamond albums. He along with Jay-Z are the only 2 rappers to sell platinum for 2009. And the only time he sold less than platinum was with his "Infinite" album. Off of facts and numbers, I think Em should be considered.

Imma be real, I disagree, I still think between his freestyles and his sales he's should be considered. Imma be real though, I posted this on a few forums and your one of the first to disagree and bring REAL evidence to the table. I got mad respect for that.

If he had stuck to his Infinate style then I can take him more serious, but why pass the torch to someone that doesn't need it to be passed to him.

People are reluctant to pass the torch to Em because he's white and is dominating a predominantly black genre. It's bitterness.

People are upset because Em did what their favorite black rappers couldn't (Jay included), so now they have to do all they can to take away from Em's legacy of classics and numbers.

The fact that Em is 80 million albums sold and has four critically acclaimed LP's...that in itself deserves GOAT consideration.

As Jay said..."men lie; women lie; numbers don't."

But Em never had a classic, and albums like American Gangster and Untitled are arguably classics.

The thing that fueled this comment was wayne saying he gonna pass the torch to jay when he go to jail. I'll give wayne one thing, he's consistant as hell but lyrically nowhere near the greatest rapper alive. Also the rap game is so fucked up right now, most rappers rap about drugs and being hood. I got nothing against that, I say rap what you know, I got a problem with rappers rapping about that shit and never did it. Honestly I didn't care too much for the eminem show. I liked the relapse but i thought it could be better. Facts are facts and I will say one of the only things holding him back is his consistency. Lyrically only one person beat eminem in a cypher. With sales he's outdone just about every rapper. gee757 disagrees with me but brings no facts to the table, just racial slurs, bad grammar, and phrases we ain't used in years. It is what it is. I ain't mad at him though, ain't nothing wrong with being an internet thug. Thanks to everybody for the comments and the posts.
