The first song I ever heard form that album was Halftime, that shit was mind blowing. Then I heard the album, wow is all I have to say about that. I was 13 at the time and it changed the way I listen to rap forever. That's why to this day it's in my top 3 favorite albums of all time.

How many here remembers when Illmatic came out?

How did you hear about Illmatic before it came out?

And what was the Hip-Hop scene like at the time?

Illmatic is truly one of the greatest Hip-Hop Albums ever.

First Question: I remember

2nd question: I heard 'Live at the BBQ' and I think Large Prof said something or MC Serch said something about Nas's album coming out.

3rd Question: The scene was great, no east coast/west coast beef. Folks were just doing them, having fun and etc.

and yes, Illmatic is one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever...I used to love that tape, yeah tape, that joint truly blew my mind.

Im from cleveland. im 35. that shit came and went with me. i didnt notice. fuck, i didnt really hear about nas until his 2nd album and thats only because tupac called him out. I did see an Illmatic billboard in cleveland. but if i aint heard of a rapper or knew who "put him on" then i wasnt checkin for them. and i really wouldnt be checkin for him if i knew it was main source and 3rd bass lol who put him on lol. fuck outta here lol.

I only listened to Nas because of Tupac. "lil nigga name nas think he Live like me, talkin bout he left the hospital took 5 like me."

But when i finally listened to him, i was impressed. I didnt hear illmatic until the year 2000. I bought the next 3. not the firm but i liked the firm album.

Now, i understand Nas. He has a lot of knowledge and he is in the best interest of black people. but he still gotta make money and support his peoples. Thats why he aint "Jay-Z" status. He know too much. white people dont want yall to know that yall were stolen from Africa and Jesus never existed, yall should not get perms, or be democrats, and yall have a right to wild out because we are only reacting to the oppression and racism of the white man, but we should not lash out on each other when we express that pain.

Nas know that, but only say it bit by bit, piece by piece, rationally.

I know that and i am a teacher. but I too can only spread that knowledge bit by bit, piece by piece, rationally.

white people suck. hiding truths. pictures of bin dead laden. scare of black people regaining their identity.

dont know why they so scared fo. niggaz'll fuck it up anyways.

I remember.

Nas had a huge buzz in NY after Live at the BBQ. Then talks of a solo started surfacing.

The scene at the time was live. Rakim, Kane, and KRS were still regarded as the best and all conversations were held around these greats. I personally was in denial. Many were comparing Nas to Rakim and I resented Nas for it. LOL. I never thought Nas would go on to surpass Rakim as a lyricist. Damn was I wrong. Illmatic was definitely ahead of it times in regards to production, and Rhyming.

a little before illmatic dropped, my man put me onto nas. i remember, at 13 yrs old, i had just bought dj equipment out the back of the source mag (beat street ad) and i went to the local mall and seen they had the nas 'it aint hard to tell' 12 inch single. i copped it not having any idea who nas was.

that was it.

since then things have never been the same

illmatic had ny going nuts. it was/is def a game changer imo
