MY Description Of A "Classic"

That's some interesting mentions in your list and I agree with most of it. But for a classic it should also have songs that are above that other level, y'know timeless anthems or classics. An album filled with nothing but good songs is not a classic cause hardly anything stands out. I definitely agree with your first five though I'd rather take "Life is Too Short" by Short Dog.

Personally I disagree with your description. For example, I can play chicken n beer by Luda without skipping one track but only one or two tracks truly stand out. Its got to have diverse concepts, metaphors and lyrics. Got to have great stories and say something worthwhile

If you can listen to an album from intro to outro and NOT(i repeat) NOT skip ONE track....... Thats a classic

albums (on my itunes at least) that are "classics" to me are:

Illmatic (NaS)

The Fix (Scarface)

Me Against The World (2pac)

Short Dogs In The House (Too Short)

Midnight Marauders (A Tribe Called Quest)

Just Tryin Ta Live (Devin The Dude)

The Lost Tapes (NaS)

Resurrection (Common)

Tha Last Meal (Snoop Dogg)

Sadly i CANT say College Dropout only because of "workout plan" (still a great album)

if I used that standard then no album is classic to me...there's never been an album where I love every single song that I wouldn't skip anything...to me a classic album is when you hear one song on that album anywhere and as soon as it's done you start singing the next song after it w/o even thinking..those are my classic albums

Ehh, just listen to The Geto Boys (the album) and see what you'll think. I mean, it's perhaps the most consistent album in quality I've ever heard. You love one song, you love the whole album. It's so consistent it's almost like a compilation.

But it depends if that type of hip-hop appeals to you. If it does, then have a good luck enjoying every single song.

i just had to bring this up cuz im always hearing folks say something a classic and i dont understand why (i.e. recovery, teflon don, etc.) not sayin their garbage but not classics to me.

i have that album...it still doesn't change the fact that to my ears there's never been a cd I've heard where I would never skip a song...even my favorite album of all time I may not simply be in the mood to hear a certain record or I may not like one or 2 songs on it

Signs of a classic to me

1. Impact (it must change hiphop in some form and influence it's peers or another generation, and it has to have some sales).None of that regional classic bullshit!

2. Replay (it has to stand the test of time and not sound dated)

3. it has to be the perfect balance of production and songwriting/lyricism (not all albums have to be lyrical imo, as long as the songwriting is strong, see Too Short, Pac, Face,etc)

In my honest opinion there are less than 30 Universal classic in hiphop imo and just because an album sold alot doesn't mean it's a classic either which is something that is done alot today. As far as i'm concerned the last classic album was College Dropout imo, and maybe Trap Musik because they ushered in something new to rap.
