Lol, do you believe that if they had continued their pagan belief system, or converted to Christianity. That the women there would be treated any better?
It's a cultural fault.
Regardless of what or who they believed in, their culture would remain largely unchanged.
The bible tells women to cover their heads and avoid pork and alcohol. And that men are the masters of their household.
Pre-Islam paganism made female infanticide okay, even commendable.
Basically, human rights in that region has been screwed for a looooong time. And that isn't going to change no matter who believes what.

I think some secular humanism would help them out a lot, actually.

But I don't see anything in the Koran that really honestly gives women equal legal standing with men. It's a patriarchal text and this isn't a controversial opinion at all.

Could just be based on my own experience, but anybody who has ever questioned my religious stance (or lack thereof) was never a muslim - I've had Christians, 7th day Adventists, Israelites, etc... try to "lore" me to their religion but never a muslim.

Bill Maher and Tavis Smiley are both right...i thought that when I saw the episode last friday...but where I somewhat disagree with Tavis Smiley is that while yes we shouldn't play the "who is more wrong" blame game, I do think that there does need to be some acknowledgment of the differences between certain cultures especially when talking about stuff like this...

ok, but did they actually do it? the last case I heard about they never followed through on. IMO, the Nigerian Muslims are cool for the most part and have maintained a strong balance between the sexes and this goes for most of Africa WHETHER CHRISTIAN, MUSLIM OR ANIMIST, West Asia, India & East Asia. the family structure is still strong, which is something that you do not find amongst westerners unless they are recent immigrants or blue bloods.

Well as an African American, the majority of us have been living under feminism and female led households since the 1970's and arguably late 60's. It comes with it's pros (WOMAN'S RIGHTS, INDEPENDENCE) and cons (ABORTION, PROMISCUITY)...

You just have to roll with the punches as a western male. That's just how it is. I'm prepared to deal with the western woman in whatever way that she comes.
