Even with his latest guest appearances, he's exhibited absolutely no consciousness. "Kinda Like a Big Deal" "Run This Town" "Digital Girl" "Forever" just off the top of my head, all have commercial materialistic verses.

Since when was Kanye ever conscious rapper? Sure, he rapped about social and political issues, but let's not forget that this is the same guy who billed himself the "Louis Vuitton Don" and had songs like "Workout Plan" and "Breathe In, Breathe Out", the original "Diamonds Are Forever" and "Celebration." Kanye has never really fit into a box when it came to rapping.

The verses on some of those songs are no different in content than what he was spittin' on the first two albums. In "Run This Town", he's pretty much talking about the pressures of success especially w/ the lines about him telling people no photos while he's at church and the line about "this the life everybody ask for?" In "Forever" he has a line about him doing anything to have his Granny back. Family and success have been a part of his music from the jump. Like I said, dude has never been a conscious rapper.

He's never been a conscious rapper, but at the same time he's not dropping tracks like Diamonds and Two Words anymore.

Are you all saying Kanye West was never a backback rapper? Because I would beg to differ. I think he was the most materialistic conscious rapper, but throwing a reference to your mother in a verse about sex, girls, money, and cars doesn't make you conscious.

And the majority of College Dropout WAS conscious:

We Don't Care

All Falls Down

Spaceship

Jesus Walks

Never Let Me Down

Two Words

Through The Wire

Family Business

Last Call

all conscious records. The majority of Late Registration was conscious as well.

Agreed. The danger of putting an MC in a box is people get disappointed when he steps out of it, but he never wanted to be in it in the first place.

I never considered him a conscious rapper to be honest, but he was the bridge between the mainstream and underground.

He was never a conscious rapper, you rap nerds tried to box him in as one. Dude has always rapped about girls, clothes, money, etc along with message.

Kanye has never been concious. He's had a lot of concious records and, in fact, concious songs broke him into the mainstream. But he was never strictly a concious or backpack rapper. He does whatever he feels I guess.
