I think you gotta understand and master the business first before you even attempt to do that. If rappers play it smart, they can take the game back from the majors. If Drake stayed indie he would've went platinum, especially with the buzz he had with SFG. An artist would have to recreate that buzz (not hard to do, just put out good music and be marketable), play all his cards business and networking wise, and just have good timing. Hell, 200k is great if you're indie, especially if you're touring.

He'll to the Naw.

The only platinum rappers left are JayZ, Femenim, Drake, Wayne, and Nicky Minaj...nobody goes platinum anymore.

Unless you have the budget for nice visuals, proper promotion, and a big distributer you ain't even going 100K.

Tech N9ne is prolly the most successful independent artist and he can't even go Gold.

Drake and Nicki's platinum statuses are still pending... they both dropped one album each, with Drake's 2nd one on the way, and by the leak and reviews, it's not looking good for son, but I could be wrong. The thing about them cats (and Kanye, how could you forget him?) is that their albums are events, in the sense that there's always a big hype behind it. You can't just approach an audience like "here's my music, hope you enjoy it" anymore, in fact that has never worked. That shit gotta be a movie, and with internet and all the cats that's getting buzz from their laptops, someone just gotta play their cards right. I mean, the "greatest freakout ever" World of Warcraft kid could put out a platinum album if he played the game right.

Yeah I forgot about Yeezy....he's still a Plat artist.

Now Soula Boy was in a position to do it when he had his crazy buzz but the teeny-boppers that were obsessed with his music were not the types that buy music digitally so he needed distribution to get maximum sales. If you offer an artist a million dollars they are going to take the money regardless and say goodby to independence.

Hip hop more than other genres is moreso a popularity contest and if people don't see you in videos, hear you on the radio, see you on TV then they won't support you with the same zeal that they do other artists with more exposure.

Drake is the one artist I see who could pull it off because of his cross-marketing success as an R&B cat which affords him a lot more flexibility to crossover into that PoP and R&B demo' were chicks will support you by actually buying your CDs.

Trust me tho' Drizzy will go Plat here in the states and Plat in Canada regardless the reviews.

the fact that the big distributor isnt needed any more if you can groom your fans to buy digitally via your own .com, raphsody, itunes, amazonmp3 etc ....... makes this whole thing possible in my opinion .......... as long as you can balance your budget right to promote accross actleast half of the 50 states especially hitting all the major markets ... i think it can be pulled off indy wise ... any true indy thats savvy can spend money to come to your city and leave with @least the money he/she spent plus more ;) grind it outttttttttttttttttt

just my $0.02 lol ;)

ha ha and i def dont deny it ..... cause he aint going indy .... Lloyd banks is already indy ... HFM2 was an indy release via EMI ;) ...... but his latest cold corner 2 was a true indy release came straight from lloyds hands to itunes and all the other digital sites ;)

him and yayo been doing this for a minute but in my opinion they arent really truelly taking advantage of it ... .but it maybe due to some legal issues the music may have not been cleared ...... but if it has been cleared dudes def should continue to work that strategy and step it up

very very very very true and in my opinion this is what keeps guys like lil wayne, roscoe dash, gucci & wacka popping .... and gucci & wacka are indy via E1 .... so i def can see that being pulled off you just gotta have your relationship and leverage in tact .....

this is def a major task .... not by any means saying this is cake and anyone can do it ........ ijs with the right state of mind and grind in todays climate i think it may can happen ;)

Drake could have right around the time he was deciding where to sign, but he chose a major and signed with YMCMR. He had his destiny in his hands but fucked up.

Do i think someone could do it without any type of major label backing, not in this day and age.

lol...some off the wall shit like that...you know when it comes to rappers and money you will never get the whole truth so i just let it be what be...but i think indy artists especially in hip hop got the short end of the stick in the digital era cause hip hop is 10x more corporate than it was 10 yrs ago and definitely 20 yrs ago...the box aint around, them mom and pops cd stores are closing down quick and bootlegging done killed the independent game..they went from puttin out albums, owning they masters, building up they catalog and gettin show money to just doing mixtapes and now got to put all their eggs in one basket off itunes??..that's a step down to me because they still don't have access to radio or tv..oh yea a group called the mob figaz went over 100k back in 99 with their album
