no disrespect but both stories are incorrect

he made is first movie in 1919 whilst the first movie was made in 1888 by Louis Le Prince. When he was four years old.

and the nickname "Oscar" did not derive from his name.

but Oscar Michaceux was a pioneering film maker.

this thread wasn't made to refute what is true or not

This thread was made in honor of Black history month to introduce little known black people and their feats

Hopefully taught by elderly black people who know black history

Not something taught by googles or the man

sorry to break it to you dude but black didnt invent or create everything.I minored in film history and were did extensive research on black cinema and those are just the facts.

You aint gotta lie to kick it my nigga.

did i say invent/create, or did I say "introduce", there's a difference you know

You niggas always want to argue about some shit, nigga like I said this information is something some black elders believe to be true, so in honor of Black history month I'm just passing it along

Do I bother you when you celebrate your white history 11 months out the year, no so fuck off

Boy you lucky I ain't a mod, a cac with the screen name "fortyacres" , ought to getcha banned during black history month

he also did not introduce cinema to the world.

No , i celebrate history as is. and call out bullshit where i see it. Like i said i acknowledge he was a film pioneer but lets not deal in inaccurate accreditation , coz it dont help your cause or anyone else's.

Unlucky for you Im a Mod, and i can banned you when ever I feel like.

Happy Black History Month , my brother.

So the Oscars weren't named after him? I told all my coworkers that after reading the thread yesterday. Even showed them the picture and everything

I'm gonna say the verdict is still out on that. We just don't have proof at the moment of how this annual award has a name that can't be explained. While the man that has the name appears to have accolades out the ass to justify such an honor... but I'll chill on that for now. My info is too limited and I ain't got the time.

So, here we have a successful and prolific Black film maker named Oscar and people believe it's more far fetched for the award to have been named after him then, some woman's unsuccessful, non-film making uncle?

Gotcha.

Don't know where the name Academy Awards came from but the actual Oscar (Ptah) statue origins goes back to Ancient Egypt.

According to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the origins of the name are uncertain, but "a popular story has been that an Academy librarian and eventual executive director, Margaret Herrick, thought it resembled her Uncle Oscar and said so; and that the Academy staff began referring to it as Oscar."

hold up let me get a white person in here so we can get to the bottom of this

@"Max."

So wait, is this how ya'll really going to play it? The TC made a claim without providing any real sourcing or proof, and ya'll trying to act like anyone that doesn't just believe it outright is doubting because white people haven't confirmed it?

Come on now. This shit sounds like something that would wind up on Snopes as bullshit. I ain't saying it's wrong, but if it's fact, there should be evidence. Show the evidence instead of trying to bash people for not accepting ever random claim that someone puts up on the net.

lol @ OB going full throttle in real life with some unverified shit from the IC though.

The evidence is Oscar Micheaux is a real person (whom I knew about) who also happened to be a successful and prolific film maker.

If we can just pull shit out of the sky why cannot it not be named after this Black Man? How is the award being named after some white woman's unsuccessful, non-filming making white uncle more believable to you or anyone for that matter?

I guess we can go another 100 years and then it will come out like a Black Man actually teaching, making or providing the recipe for Jack Daniels.

this wasn't intended to be a debate thread tho

I had a few other people to post about and was hoping others would do the same

I'm not a historian and wasn't about to do research to see if whites could confirm the claims made by our black elders

Once again the intentions of the thread was to pass on info about black people as told to us by black elders

I'm not saying which is more believable. My point is that saying "There was this black guy who was successful in film, so the Oscars must have been named after him" isn't proof of anything. It's wild speculation. It's interesting and worth looking into, but nobody should take that alone and run with it as fact.

I feel you. I'm not debating this. I'd like to know the real story too because it's definitely some shit I never heard before. I'm just saying people aren't wrong for questioning the veracity of the claim. Black elders say a lot of shit. Not all of it is true.

It's not worth looking into. Just like we have all brought(without evidence) the story that some white woman's, white uncle is who the award is named after we can do the same for an actual factual black man whom we know existed and was a prolific film maker.

So i guess you are just gonna ignore the mathematics (dates) and recorded documents that there were movies already in popular circulation between 1888 and his first movie The Homesteader in 1918 ?

Why would a white organisation that was historically racist, perpetuated negative stereotypes and segregationist till probably the late 1950s name their most prestigious award after a black man ?

People shouldn't buy either without evidence. That's how stupid people operate, and that's why we have the president we have.

And you can poke holes in both stories if you try. I mean you guys tend to think whites are racist devils for the most part. You really think they'd name a prestigious award after a black man back when anti-black racism was socially acceptable and expected? I don't know, but that's shouldn't be a given.

Yeah, I can't lie, I've done it before too. That's why it's funny to me cause I know the feeling.
