My mind is jumbled with information, so yall look it up yourselves. If i recall correctly, he was able to make some independent films while Hollywood was .... shit.... either Hollywood wasn't giving him a chance or the movie business was going broke. Maybe both and some more. Whatever the case he was the first to do it without the major movie studios of the time.

Edit: I apologize folks. I reckon I got Oscar's story confused with Van Peebles. Gotta go off the wiki with this one. Dude was a very successful film maker, that much I do remember. The most prolific independent film maker of his time from what I'm reading now in this history book. He gets a brief mention, but it all seems consistent with the wiki.
