Atleast niggas like Kane, Lord Fineese, Big L, Jada,etc had a train of thought and some continuity in their rhymes. These niggas nowadays sound like they write their rhymes around their punchlines, you can tell when a punchline is forced.

To me the best punchlines aren't even from punchline artists.

It's not what you say, it's how you say it (delivery) with people nowadays, that's why people are so caught up on the swag nonsense. People don't grasp complex metaphors like that of a Lupe but lean towards the simple similes of a Nicki,Fab,Wayne,etc. They want to hear the funny punchlines, even though below the surface it's pure trash..ie "Her feet are killing her, I call it shoe-icide ", ''hang it up, flatscreen, haha, plasma'', etc. Fast food raps, the punchline rap is one of the worst things to happen to hiphop, it's the lazy mans way of so call being a lyricist.

yea, a balance of both makes for better music. content and wordplay >hollow, meaningless lyrics delivered with some entertaining punchlines. i cant really call someone a lyricist if they never said shit

People are just listening for different things. It's not so much that they aren't listening, it's just not much thought put into it. I personally don't think any of those lines in those songs are clever, but I dig the songs. I like Lupe's music and like catching things in his lyrics that I didn't catch on first and second listen. My thing is, if Nicki, Wayne, and Fab's music is killing Hip Hop because of the lyrics, why then isn't Lupe's music criticized for the delivery? Lyrics and delivery are different sides of the same coin.
