i think common is overrated because he used to be underrated

Common has a top 10 catalog and one of the most consistent in the game. Resurrection and Be are both classics, IMO.

Lyrically, Black Thought is better.

But Common is definitely better than Talib and Mos Def.

Common=Black Thought. Both are criminally slept on, and Common isn't in no way over rated, dude is lyrically one of the better more consistent artists in hip hop. Have you been to a Common live show? There's NOOOOOOOOOO WAYYYYYYYYYYY you'd ever even THINK to say dude is over rated after you see him live, dude lives and breathes hip hop..

Now as far as mainstream goes, he did go under the radar til around 03 like the original topic poster said, however just because he's enjoying the success of his craft as well as getting the movie and tv love, doesnt all of a sudden mean hes over rated, just means he paid his dues...

Black Thought again, is criminally slept on and lyrically is up there with Common, both have stronger catalogues (in my opinion) than Mos Def and Talib Kweli but all four are talented individuals.

Common's in my personal top 5, black thought is top 10-15

Testify's beat is....questionable..however the rest of Be is classic shit...

And I'd never argue that Talib Kweli and Mos Def aren't dope and definitely uccupy spots within my top 20, HOWEVER, Mos Def's catalogue is the weakest out of ALL of them and if anybody out of the four of them is over rated then sadly it is the Mighty Mos. One Classic Collab Album, One Near Classic Debut followed by 2 dissapointing albums and the Estatic was ok to me 3.5...

On the other hand Talib Kweli has a good catalogue musically but his delivery lacks the passion and fire of Common and his Concepts tend to be repetitve from album to album. Common has a broader range of subject matter from that grimy Chi-town street shit (Can I Borrow a Dollar) to the Conscious (One Day It'll All Make Sense) to the soulful (Be, Finding Forever) To a mixture (Ressurection)

I'm sorry I think you need to edit that first post because Mos Def isn't quite as good as Common and DEFINITELY not Talib Kweli's rambling ass.

Bottom line, Common came through and crushed Westside Connection with relative ease. Not many can do what he can.
