if your want to teach and have questions ask

if you have questions about education in general ask ( i might know the answer )

If you have questions about what happens in a southern predominatly black highschool ask

or other stuff i guess if its relevant

Idk about in the states but here in Toronto, social studies was a somewhat useless class. It was informative tho.

Do u have class debates?

no by social studies i mean i teach all of the social sciences from world history ( all histories ) to sociology to economics

yeah we have debates. the best two debates that I have ever had were in my African American History class we debated on if HBCU's where still necessary and if segregration was benificial to blacks

The short answer is Nope. The good teachers( black and white) go far beyond those house hold names. There is a good curriculm for African American histoy atleast where I teach but the worst part about all of this is that most om my African American students could care less. The highest grade in my Afam Class was given to a Hispanic student.

AA? I dont know what that it but if you get an education degree your a shoe in if you get a BS degree you can enter through " lateral entry" but you still have to get a bachelors degree. if you know a trade you can teach that and get paid its federally funded so you almost garunteed to keep your job.

Do you feel as if you're letting your students down when you feed them a 'history book' which is full of blatant lies and falsehoods? If you teach in a southern predominantly black high school, do you feel that these handcuffed curriculum restrictions under serves the student population, especially Black students? Do you teach your students to think critically about all subject matter brought before them, and how is written on the page is not always how things go down? Context, sub-context.

ok so the first part about the book being falshoods imma need you to be more specific cause the entire book in not a lie. Is it skewed to a eurocentric view yes do i do my best to un skew it yes i do. Black or white curriculum restrictions hurt but sometime they are necessary. Some of them are in place to make sure that the education at least in theory is the same from school to school. Working around those sometimes unecessary restrictions is what makes any teacher a good teacher. Whats crazy is walking in the footsteps of the curriculm will when you praise from your principal but your student who need you the most will suffer. All of my principals hate me. I go above an beyond. So the answer to your "think critcally" question is yes. Real teachers ask their students " why does _____ happen " That is my favorite question to ask. All history books require students to not ask why. I challenge them all the time to think about what the author is trying to say and does that match up with the perspective of those that experienced what ever . I hope this makes sense. If i didnt answer your questions let me know.

What type of things do you do beyond the cookie cutter shit to engage the students?

It is beyond me why they dont atlest make learning how to invest and trade in stock part of the curriculm i got my ideas though. In my class I go out of my way to teach it next year i am going to add in a section on options investing.

In world history for example I we watch portions of Ivan van sertima's they came before columbus. I teach Egypt as a part of african histor, I know that may sound strange but it is not a part of african history in our book it is apart of Acient civilizations.

My African American history class!!!!! yo imma get fired. I am critical of both black folks and crackas and they get info on everybody form why racism even existed here (less to do with race and more to do with fear of mysigenation and mixed babies than racial inferiority) to how the civil rights movement played out in NC ( where we are) to cointelpro and the cia involvement in the crack trade.

The bolded has been my biggest problem. I have a history background from U of I. There are several misleading exaggerations and omissions from the average history book.

1) Post American revolution, the many rebellions that took place between the haves and the have nots, land lords and tenants that influenced legislation regarding property rights

2) the role of socialism and the many many many strikes that took place in the late 18th and early 19th century that formed the modern 40 hr work week.

There are many omissions in history book text, but if you are teaching our students to question and to think critically, then perhaps curious minds will prevail and they will discover the truth.
