How high did Lauryn Hill set the bar for female emcees with The Miseducation?

Jean sings too but she does it rarely. Jean Grae is an underground artist. She's impacted the underground greatly and anyone who listens to underground hip hop will tell you the same. IMO she's too complex for mainstream hip hop. She's straight hardcore RAP, whereas Lauryn Hill is more Pop/R&Bish

BTW, you can't really compare Miseducation to any of Jean's work because Miseducation is more of a soul album than a rap album

I don't know if that complexity argument works. Even someone like Talib Kweli has made some sort of impact, commercially, even if it was very little. Little is better than nothing at all. I just think that no one gives a shit about Jean. That's why she's so non-existent.

The Miseducation was just as much a rap album as it was a soul album. How was it not?

And Lauryn isn't really a pop artist, presuming you mean it the way I think you mean it. She's a hip-hop/soul artist, whose music just so happened to become popular.

3 out of 15 tracks on that album were straight hip hop. The rest, she sung.

In fact, no hate on Lauryn cuz she's in my top 10 goat but if she didn't sing, she wouldnt be nearly as popular as she is

Talib Kweli makes his presence known in the commercial industry. He puts himself out there. He does commercials, he releases videos for MTV and BET, he does TV shows.. Jean does not, aside from the MTV Made episode she was a part of, but even then, she wasn't showcasing her talent or anything

It's probably also worth mentioning that The Miseducation is labeled as the first hip-hop album to ever win AOTY at the Grammys.

"The Miseducation was the first hip hop album to win Album of the Year, and no other album in the genre has won the award until the OutKast double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below."

To flat out dismiss the album's hip-hop by calling it an r&b album is ludicrous.

"I'm On A Boat" got a Grammy nod so I mean.. what are you saying

And I'm only saying that you cant compare Miseducation to any of Jeans albums because Lauryn only rapped on about 3 songs. she did a verse here or there on maybe 1 or 2 others but all of Jeans albums are straight rapping. You're comparing a soul album to a rap album

Bottom line Lauryn can spit, no female MC has even come close to her Im mad at the young marley for fucking her head up

Lyrically, I just think that Lauryn is way more intricate than Jean, whom I think is simple.

Simple can work at times (like Pac). But in Jean's case, it's monotonous.

Also, if you want to talk about the Fugees album, most people know her because of her voice on that album. Not her verses. Not to say they were bad. They were great, but nothing over anything Jean's done solo or in a group either

What I'm saying is that The Miseducation is labeled as the first hip-hop album to win AOTY. The majority don't label it as a "soul" album. It seems to, collectively, be labeled as a hip-hop album.

If it compels you, you can label it as a "hip-hop/soul" album. But don't flat out dismiss the hip hop by calling it strictly a soul album. It doesn't work.

Mary J. Blige is hip hop too. Hip hop is a culture. Miseducation is not a RAP album

First off, I have listened to every single piece of material that Jean has released.

From Attack of the Attacking Things to Bootleg of the Bootleg EP to This Week to Jeanius to The Evil Jeanius, hell, I even ordered The Orchestral Files from Amazon because that was the only place I could find it...so I'd like to think I'm qualified to speak on this topic.

Jean, musically, does nothing for me. Not saying that she doesn't have talent because I do think she's ill. But, judging from what I've heard of her and Lauryn, I find Lauryn to be a much more creative and intricate lyricist. Her wordplay and flow are both sick.

Jean's flow needs some serious polishing, as well.

Brother, if you was reading, I stated earlier that Lauryn is in my top 10 but personally, I think that Jean is a better MC so thats what I'm debating now.

Mary J. Blige is Contemporary R&B...r&b/soul music with hip-hop undertones.

Big difference.
