He was the first artist to really use the internet for his fan base. When myspace came out he was the biggest "Myspace" artist. had a few songs out and a mixtape but over a million fans on his myspace page. And he would talk to them and let unknown people produce for him. Show love to fans like that they'll show it back and he got big (for an indie artist)

Him being white didn't get him shit. There are whtie rappers that come and go. But mac was the first white overtly hipster weed smoker to have some boom bap weed beats in his music.
Also he was one of the few white rappers that has a geeky yet powerful prescense on the mike. Most white rappers don't have an effective sound vocally that gets people to think they legit. But Mac had that shit too. Cause most white rappers have that im awkward i box lefty sound when they rap that eliminates their popularity from white fans by default.

Him and Wiz hung around the same studio. Both got picked up by Rostrum Records, an independent label owned by someone with some sway in the industry and having a good amount of money. They developed some sort of strategy involving stoner anthems, and pushed out Wiz first. Off the strength of Wiz blowing up, they pushed Mac independently. Where Wiz needed Atlantic Record to get to middle America, Mac didn't because of his appearance.
