DR definitely. All 3 are countries with beautiful sights and culture, good food, cool people & music, etc and I have been to all except Trinidad... But I personally love DR. I went to Puerto Plata in the north but I want to go to Santiago and the capital Santo Domingo one day. I had the best time, Dominicans are known for their great hospitality and bc they know how to party lol. And I have been to Jamaica twice which is gorgeous of course but to me I prefer DR. Oh but PR >>>>>>>>>>>>>> everything.

Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago. No place like it on earth and yes, I'm biased but it's true. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and the oldest protected rain forest in the Western Hemisphere. You have a burgeoning metropolis in Trinidad and the laid back traditions and pace of Tobago. It just can't be beat. Love Jamaica and the DR ( . . . some of the best fishing in the world) but it's not even a fair choice. Carnival is in a couple weeks. One of the best times to visit Trinidad and Tobago for one of the greatest shows on earth. The pageantry but without the sleaze of Brazil's carnival.

The Caribbean islands share a lot of the same topography, even the Spanish speaking Caribbean. You know what you're getting with either choice; great beaches, sunshine and laid back atmosphere. The history of the region is shared so we share a lot culturally and socially. Trinidad and Tobago is the most developed of the Caribbean Islands economically and infrastructurally. It has the great dining, clubbing and casino gambling of a major North American City but it's still charming on places like the North Coast where things have remained unchanged for years. Tobago, where I grew up is like stepping into another world. It's fast developing but it's 60,000 people with traditions and a way of life that hasn't changed in decades. It's quaint and charming, heavily forested with as great a focus on Eco tourism as sand and sea tourism. That's what makes Trinidad and Tobago great. It's two islands with two very different ways of life.

And a much higher cost of living. Their currency valued against the US dollar is a lot higher than any other country in the region. Your money just doesn't go as far, which has stunted economic growth. It has the highest Human Development Index but far less industrial and infrastructural development as compared to Trinidad. Trinidad and Tobago lowered the value of its currency in the late 1990s to encourage industrial growth, to encourage foreign investment. We're the wealthiest country in the region with a focus on oil, natural gas, and Eco tourism.

Man, just go to Puerto Rico! You don't even need a passport if you're a US citizen. You don't have to exchange your money because they use US dollars. You can use your cell phone there AND a lot more people than other countries know English b/c it's a US territory.

It's kind of a cheap vacation if you do it right too. The women there are breathtakingly beautiful, the people are friendly and take pride in their island and teaching others about it. The food is AMAZING. There is great shopping and nightlife of course is JUMPING, sooo much to do. Plus SO many historic sights, especially in Old San Juan which is said to be one of the oldest cities in the western hemisphere and so much of it is still preserved from the streets to the forts. There's a rainforest (El Yunque) and SO many gorgeous beaches (esp if you go to the island of Culebra off the East coast, Flamenco beach was voted one of the best beaches in the world by the Travel Channel and others). I mean anything you want you got it there. I have traveled a bit and it's still my favorite place in the world. I am a little biased but everyone I know who goes falls in love and goes back.

Oh yeah plus is VERY safe for tourists to roam free, unlike places like DR and Jamaica. There is a lot of crime in PR but they do NOT mess with tourists. You can rent a car and do your own thing, it's easy to find your way around. Also I recommend renting an apartment rather than a hotel because it's cheaper and you get the real feel for the neighborhoods like a local. Like I said its safe to do, in other places in the Caribbean you can't really do stuff like that unless you know someone or something.

@ the first bolded: most of the Caribbean islands are English-speaking. So which countries do PRicans speak more English than? I can only think of Cuba, DR and the French Antilles.

@ the second bolded. From what I heard you can do the same thing in most of the islands; maybe not in Jamaica, but Jamaica is just one island among many.

While there are many similarities, Spanish speaking countries in the Caribbean have many cultural/social differences than the other islands mentioned.

It really depends on what you prefer to surround yourself with, what kind of beat you are on. Culturally speaking Jamaica is more up my alley although I lived in DR.
Many men go to DR for the women, especially Europeans who travel to DR to have fun with the prostitutes. DR is great for tourists as there are so many different activities to do from zip lining to swimming with sting rays, some places like PR do not have as much to offer. Trinidad and Tobago I've only heard good things about. Beautiful and relaxing.

As far as safety, neither of the above is worse than the other IMO, especially if you are going to a tourist area and remain there but I personally cannot stand resorts or tourist spots but it is necessary for most first timers. I will say that if you decide on DR and want to explore Santo Domingo while on your trip, dress down and take off all your jewelry prior to leaving home. Any good local will advise you to do that.

I was obviously talking about other non-English speaking countries, not limited to the Caribbean either. Like I said it's common for Puerto Ricans to speak some English or at least broken English, but go to Mexico, DR, Brazil, etc. and most people do not know English. But even in English-speaking places in the Caribbean like Jamaica the Patois is so strong and fast most people cannot understand local dialect. Most of them can turn it on and off to communicate with tourists though.

You're the first person I have ever heard say this lol. I would NEVER recommend roaming around DR like a local b/c they will smell you a mile away. Jamaica and Cuba definitely not. Trinidad, Bahamas, Barbados, etc probably not. Don't act like anyone can just go to the Caribbean and do their thing. There's a reason most people stay on resorts.
