Emails are wasted time... if any company has an individual receiving/sending out 100 emails a day, there is something wrong with their organizational structure (unless you literally get paid to read/send emails).
I have a "professional" summer job and the amount of company wide emails I receive that don't apply to me is ridiculous, so I wouldn't say it's a good way to determine whether you have a job or career.
